Age’s End: The Final Chapter — Why an X2 Raid?

Written by Feldon on . Posted in EQ2, Game Updates & Maintenance, Itemization, Raiding

kerafyrm

When nobody is happy, that means you’ve reached a successful compromise, right?

Some players are upset at the announcement that the Age’s End prophecy, which has dominated EverQuest II’s storyline for almost a decade, will not be directly experienced by solo players. Others are incredulous that it will not be a difficult 24-person raid. EQ2 Lead Designer Kyle “Kander” Vallee took to the forums to give the thinking behind why Age’s End: The Final Chapter is a x2 (12 person) raid and to encourage players to playtest the content:

So a few things.

We opted to make this an x2 because we want to give a lot broader amount of people access to it. It is the Ages End prophecy and the end of the most important story line in EverQuest II to date. Limiting this to x4 raiders seemed unfair. Sure, we could have made it a 6 man, but that seemed less epic for the content.

So we made a relatively easy x2 and a challenge x2. The challenge x2 is not really stupendously harder, or at least that isn’t the intention, but it will lend some better rewards to those who have done the work and geared up to this level of damage.

The bottom line was we wanted to give as many people access to it at that level without making it seem silly. We do not feel that an x2 format is silly. We feel our x2 content is lacking and we wish we could do substantially more.

This event is on Beta now and I encourage everyone to go check it out.

Kander

How can solo and group players experience the closure of the Age’s End story? I would imagine there will be live streams and perhaps pick-up raids giving it a go. Also, with the level cap raise to 100 this November, it seems likely that the x2 zone will be doable by a single well-geared group, or 12 players in average gear. You may not get the story right away, but there are always other ways.

From Kyle “Kander” Vallee on the EQ2 Forums:

No solid ETA yet. Soon.

Happy 4th!

What Do You Think of Fabled Deathtoll?

Written by Feldon on . Posted in Commentary, EQ2, Game Updates & Maintenance, Itemization, Raiding

It’s been just over a week since Fabled Deathtoll, a level 95 x4 raid zone opened in Norrath. While the zone and enemies may be familiar territory for Kingdom of Sky veterans, the boss battle strategies have gained a few twists. But perhaps most surprising about this revisited zone is the way loot is awarded. The EQ2 team seem to tried out several new approaches, and so far, the response has been mixed.

Instead of the typical drops off each named, certain names drop one-use recipe books that create powerful items. Other enemies drop new cyan-colored adornments. I won’t try to parse the entire structure of how loot works in the zone, but the official Fabled Deathtoll thread met an untimely end as the tenor of the feedback did not amuse the EQ2 moderation team.

The thread got a number of responses from the EQ2 design team. Indeed, just before the thread was closed, it earned this response from Kander pointing the way towards a number of corrective changes, some of which have already been patched into the game:

Will the Adorning Madness Stop? Sorta…

Written by Feldon on . Posted in EQ2, Itemization

If you feel that the amount of Adorning and Reforging necessary every time you receive a new piece of gear has reached levels of insanity, well you’re not alone. Having freedom of choice and customization of stats is great, but there is a limit and we’ve probably reached it. Adornment Dislodgers are pricey and players who need 3 of the same type of adornment must run adv solo, group, or raid zones ad nauseum until the one they want drops and they win a Need roll.

adornments

In the Destiny of Velious expansion, once a character looted a War Rune (the best of the red adornments), that adornment became available henceforth from an NPC vendor. In essence, these Adornments were character unlocked. The downside to this convenience for the EQ2 design team is, it required the creation of hundreds of invisible quests working behind-the-scenes to support the feature. While it doesn’t sound like we’ll be getting character flags or adornment unlocks per-character any time soon, EQ2 Lead Designer Kander has posted some tantalising responses on a forum thread which show the team are aware of our frustration and are working on solutions.

On price of Adornment Dislodgers and the fact they don’t preserve purple adornments…

We’re going to change the Superb Prismatic Adornment Dislodger to remove purple adorns and we are going to lower it to like 15 plat. Our goal with the expansion is to make moving your adornments around more trivial and have it really be about the chase of said adornments.

[When?] As soon as possible on the Superb Prismatic Adornment Dislodger price reduction and change.

What about character flags?

We’re not going to do that, but we are going to make it a lot better. The DoV method is not sustainable.

We will make it 10x better though.

more specifically:

We have some other cool UI changes and mechanics changes coming with adorning soon too.

[When?] UI stuff will be between now and expansion.

So hopefully some of the pain can be eased on adornment juggling in the near and not so near future.

  • The getting dropped into Champion’s Respite instead of going straight to your match from your home server is still not fixed.
  • If you are chronomentoring on your home server when you accept a battlegrounds match, you will have your chronomentor session restored to you when you return at no cost.
  • When you enter a battlegrounds match you will get put into your team’s respawn instead of being dropped in the middle of the map.
  • Backfilled players will be put on the team with the fewest total number of players.
  • Players who queue as a group will all be placed on the same team. However, the order in the group/raid window will not be maintained.

Fabled Dungeons This Year and Beyond

Written by Feldon on . Posted in EQ2, Game Updates & Maintenance, Grouping, Itemization

fabled_sanctumofscaleborn_123b

Looks like we can expect the Fabled Kingdom of Sky zones to be rounded out with Deathtoll some time this year. From Tuesday’s EQ2 Dev Team Ask Me Almost Anything

Q: “I have heard rumors about a fabled deathtoll, which I know you cant confirm or deny.”

A: “RUMORS! You’re right. The design team is working on a fabled version of Deathtoll. :)”

and for those who want to put 2 and 2 together about Deathtoll being this year…

  1. We won’t be doing a big Fabled release again this year, but at least one dungeon will be released.

Further down the road, a player (Meaghan Stormfire) asked on the EQ2 Forums:

I always thought it would be cool if you took all five Guk zones and stitched them together into one massive contested zone. That would be awesome.

To which Lead Designer Kander responded:

I think that would be pretty awesome too. In fact we have talked about it several times.

AT which point players started asking about Echoes of Faydwer dungeons and raid zones such as Emerald Halls to which Kander replied:

Next year will be Fabled Echoes of Faydwer stuff.

EQ2 Devs Participate in Ask Me Almost Anything on Reddit

Written by Feldon on . Posted in EQ2, Free-to-Play (EQ2X), Game Updates & Maintenance, Grouping, Itemization, PvP/BG/Proving Grounds, Raiding

Reddit, that last bastion of 1990’s internet look-and-feel, hosted an “Ask Me Almost Anything” with the EQ2 developers and designers this morning and Cyliena of EQ2 ZAM has summarized the most interesting questions which received responses from the team. Here are a few of the more interesting responses:

Q: “Any hints on the next expansion’s theme? Will the level cap finally raise to 100 with it?”

A: “You may want to tune into the next EQ2 Insider livestream on http://www.twitch.tv/everquest2. 😉 It’ll be May 7th, 2014 at 2PM PDT! (We’ll have a YT vod up if you can’t watch it live.)”

A: “We gave you hints last year at SOE Live! We showed pictures!”

Followup: The teaser pictures shown during last year’s SOE Live expansion panel were of dinosaurs(another here from the art panel).

and..

Q: “Hello, can you give an update on the improved Dungeon Finder / Group Builder? Including when it might make its way to the live servers?”

A: “As I mentioned above, we have Dave Kish working on the matchmaking code now. The first task was to create an environment to adequately test and evaluate the issues that are reported on Live and we have tracked a lot down. We will let the community know anytime we have something to report, like when we’d help to test new code on Beta, etc. This is one of our highest priorities.”
