Podcast: EQ2Wire Interviews EQ2 Lead Designer Kander for Altar of Malice

Written by Feldon on . Posted in EQ2, Expansion News, Grouping, Itemization, Raiding, Tradeskill

EQ2Wire was fortunate enough to interview EQ2 Lead Designer Kyle “Kander” Vallée for today’s Altar of Malice expansion launch to talk about a broad spectrum of topics including:

  • The building blocks of MMORPG content design and how collaboration between artists, animators, musicians, and designers makes it possible for a cohesive expansion with a strong theme and storyline.
  • The new Altar of Malice zones as they fit into Solo, Adv Solo, Heroic, Event Heroic, and Raid playstyles
  • How Altar of Malice builds on the Itemization bedrock laid by Tears of Veeshan
  • A hint of what we can expect in next year’s content-focused updates.

This is my first (and possibly only) podcast recording so please be gentle. I’m not an old pro at this like Dellmon, Aliscious, and Osgz of EQ2Talk. 😉

This was awesome Fel, very insightful, thanks for doing it.

Sounds like a promising year lined up for EQ2. Can’t wait for the PQ and deity system revamp, not to mention cross-server DF and a return to more meatier content updates albeit perhaps not as frequent.

This surprise new zone for next year sounds pretty intriguing too.

It took over 4 hours to record and edit. Transcribing it would take another 3-4 hours. It’s a casual conversation. I didn’t get into any big controversies and there isn’t any major breaking news in it.

      * Next week the EQ2 team will be posting some focused feedback threads to find out what bugs players most, and what quality of life changes they’d like to see.
      * At some point in the future the EQ2 team plan to tweak the Item examine windows in-game to be a little more organized.
      * We can look forward to bigger updates next year like one in early Spring which will add a new raid, heroic, and adv solo with a totally new theme (not an existing repurposed zone).
      * We already heard about Public Quests and Deity Revamp and Cross-server Dungeon Finder next year.

Well, living in Europe yesterday Expac was released half past midnight so no way to play (on Freeport). Today after a working-day I go to my good PC to play a bit and… no way to log even is SOE.com status servers are ok…

I don t want to be rude or anything but dam you need a lot of patience to be able to play a game you bought, even more with the unlucky time servers r going down when you re GMT time 🙁

Waiting, waiting, sure it s gonna be great tho

Are ancient spells just random drops ala the way masters drop…just a random scroll? Or will they somehow be tied to a character and drop for their class?

I believe they are just random drops. You must have the Grandmaster scribed to scribe an Ancient. Thus far ZERO Ancient spells have dropped.
