EQ2 Producer’s Letter Coming Today @ 10am

Dead-Sea-Scrolls

EQ/EQ2 Executive Producer Holly “Windstalker” Longdale tweeted late last night that we can expect a Producer’s Letter this morning at 10am PDT.

Producer letters for #everquest and #eq2 coming tomorrow aboot (cdn) 10 am Pacific!

— Holly Longdale (@TheWindstalker) September 15, 2015

We can’t say with any certainty what the letter will contain, but we are rather overdue for the announcement of EverQuest II’s twelfth expansion. Typically, these are announced in July or August at the annual SOE Live event which is of course on hiatus this year. And yes, this fall’s update is going to be an expansion as EQ2 Lead Designer Kander has posted on several occasions. Not a guspansion, campansion, campaign, nor a rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle, although those can be surprisingly useful.

EQ2 Team Looking into Phantom Seas Signature Quest Glitch

Written by Feldon on . Posted in EQ2, Game Updates & Maintenance

altarofmalice_tranquilsea3

A handful of players have been reporting an intermittent glitch with the Phantom Seas signature quest line, specifically at the Allu’thua Abduction subquest. The quest reaches a point where hailing the needed NPC no longer updates the quest. We’re unsure of how many people have experienced this issue. We did not find a Bug Report for it on the DGC Issue Tracker website.

EQ2 designer extraordinaire Kaitheel has responded to the thread a couple of times and reports that the code side are looking into where the quest might be going awry.

Update Notes: Tuesday, September 15, 2015 — Rare AoM Merchant

From the EQ2 Forums:

POPULATION / ZONE PROGRESSION
Phantom Seas
The Rare Drop Merchant for Altar of Malice can now be found in the Phantom Seas!

Precipice of Power [Raid]
The stone adds in the Brell Serilis encounter should no longer kill pets unless directly attacking them.

ITEMS
Sturdy armor molds will no longer refuse to grant the quest for players that did not have enough city faction.
The passive effect for Finsher III now grants potency, instead of offensive only potency.

Commentary

A merchant selling rare heroic drops from the previous expansion’s dungeons has been a late-summer mainstay over most of the last 6 years. The purpose of these vendors is to somewhat level the playing field for those players who have had rotten luck with the dice. Yet every year this vendor has been added, certain desirable rare items are left off, while other seemingly common items make an appearance. The prices also tend to be a surprise, with some item costs being completely out-of-whack.

One Week to Vote for New Server Names — September 8-15

Written by Feldon on . Posted in EQ2, Game Updates & Maintenance

moving-clip-art

The time has come for EQ2 players on the US servers being consolidated to pick their new server names. An in-game poll is being conducted to let players make this important decision.

Crushbone/Oasis/Butcherblock denizens can choose from:

  • Maj’Dul
  • Poet’s Palace
  • Shimmering Citadel
  • Cleft of Rujark
  • Scornfeather’s Roost

Everfrost/Guk/Unrest denizens didn’t get a single one-word choice (what about Bonemire?):

  • Halls of Fate
  • Vault of El’Arad
  • Sanctum of the Scaleborn
  • Tenebrous Tangle
  • Palace of the Awakened

Freeport/Permafrost/Nagafen denizens got the most kickass choices by far:

  • Veeshan’s Peak
  • Chardok
  • Kor-Sha
  • Skyfire
  • Protector’s Realm

NOTE: Presumably, each account gets one vote per server. We’re not sure what happens in cases of different characters on different servers on the same account. Presumbly they’re different pollids so one account with characters on each of the affected servers would get ONE vote per server.

Daybreak Games Login Issues Last Night

Written by Feldon on . Posted in EQ2, Game Updates & Maintenance

server_connect_with

Why are we reporting on a login server outage yesterday afternoon that’s already been resolved? Because communication on the forums was especially good this time around and we report good news too. Don’t worry though, the comments will make up for it.

EQ/EQ2 Executive Producer Holly “Windstalker” Longdale and Community Manager Mepps (who normally tends the DCUO community) pitched in to keep players informed in a “Can’t Log in” forum thread, as well as on Facebook and Twitter.

As a bonus, it was pointed out that the product specifications and marketing information for EverQuest II on the Steam Marketplace has not been updated in three years. Windstalker agreed that this needed to be updated pronto to include the last two expansions and other details.

Thanks for keeping an eye on things while the march towards EverQuest II’s twelfth expansion continues!

  • Added guild leader voting commands for leaderless guilds:

Server Consolidation Naming Polls on Tuesday, Sept. 8

Written by Feldon on . Posted in EQ2, Game Updates & Maintenance

From the EQ2 Forums:

Greetings, intrepid Norrathians!

After our hotfix next Tuesday morning, Sept. 8, the servers being consolidated will find a poll delivered through in-game mail with the top 5 appropriate name suggestions for their new servers. The vote will last 1 week until we hotfix again the following Tuesday, Sept. 15.

The servers being consolidated will get their own naming polls based on themes assigned to them. We had a lot of great name suggestions that will be revealed Tuesday with the poll!

  • Butcherblock, Crushbone, and Oasis servers will get their own Desert of Flames-themed naming poll.
  • Everfrost, Guk, and Unrest will get their Kingdom of Sky-themed naming poll.
  • Freeport, Nagafen, and Permafrost will get the Ruins of Kunark-themed poll.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the naming suggestions. We will share the vote results on the afternoon of Sept. 15!

Both the Twitter and Facebook posts with this announcement included our infographic with credit given:

EQ2 2015 Server Merge Detailed Answers and Naming Policy!

Written by Feldon on . Posted in Game Updates & Maintenance

servermergeimage

If you only take away three pieces of information from today’s announcement spelling out the exact procedure and policies that will be followed in the forthcoming merger of ten EQ2 US servers into four, it’s these:

  • The 2015 EQ2 server merger will follow rules regarding name reservation similar to those used in prior merges. You won’t have to “race” or fight other players to reserve character names. You won’t have to call in sick or take off a vacation day. In other words, cooler heads have prevailed!
  • Every EQ2 character will be given a transfer token to move to another server within the 7 days after the merge happens. If you don’t like the server you get merged to, relax, you’ll be able to move to another server to go where the action is. Don’t expect everyone to move to Antonia Bayle — it will actually the smallest EQ2 US server after the mergers are complete. One thing you can expect — heavy Guild Recruitment during the free transfer period.
  • Everything will transfer over! The EQ2 team have been redoing the underlying database tech for EQ2 to make things like Cross-Server Dungeon Finder possible. As part of this work, there will be nothing lost during these Server Merges. That includes Mail, Banks, Guilds, Player-made Dungeons, etc. Nothing will be lost. There is no need to run around trying to corral resources

These are significant changes from the previous Upcoming Server Consolidations announcement.

From Holly “Windstalker” Longdale on the EQ2 Forums:

We have been working toward our Server Consolidation plans and saw a lot of great questions and want to address as many as we can. Here you’ll find answers to the questions we could answer. We’ll update as we go!

General

Q: How is this server consolidation different than server merges of the past?

A: We’re not merging one server’s data into another. A consolidation means all characters from the designated origin servers are moved onto a new server.

Q: How will we be able to retain names if others have the same name?

A: In the event of duplicate character names during the consolidation, priority will be given to the character who has logged in to the game within the past sixty (60) days. If multiple characters have logged in within the past sixty (60) days, then the character which was created first will retain their name. Other same-named characters will have an “X” (or several) added to their names automatically until their name is unique. Each player that is auto-renamed this way will get a rename potion to change their name.

EverQuest II “Prison Server” Draws Widespread Media Attention

Written by Feldon on . Posted in EQ2, Game Updates & Maintenance

hell-7

The announcement that EverQuest II will experiment with banishing players for cheating or other egregious bannable offenses to a “prison server” has been met with mixed reactions. Some have described the idea as bold and a potential money maker as well as providing a petri dish for game bugs and exploits to be discovered and fixed. Others have derided the plans as a waste of development resources. Some went so far as to describe it as the “dumbest idea ever”.

UPDATE! CNN Money has now picked up the story. We’re up to 21 media sites covering this news:

Now it looks like the joke may be on those naysayers. In exchange for a few hours of development time and the relatively low cost of additional server space, this announcement has garnered unprecedented media attention and coverage from no less than a dozen major gaming news sites!

It is my understanding that the “prison server” has been idea in discussion for years and that it was intended to solve a real problem. According to Holly “Windstalker” Longdale, Executive Producer for EQ and EQ2, this was not a publicity stunt. It’s certainly possible that marketing wasn’t involved in this at all.

Still Having Launchpad Issues? Solutions Inside

Written by Feldon on . Posted in EQ2, Game Updates & Maintenance

Yesterday, the EverQuest II launchpad was updated. This caused numerous issues but most were resolved and most players are now able to connect. If you’re still having issues, here are some further solutions:

Q: You get a black screen when you open the Launchpad. Now what?

A: From Caith on the EQ2 Forums:

Open Start -> Settings -> Control Panel > Internet Options
Click on the Advanced tab on the far right.
Scroll down the Settings pane to Security.
Enable the “Do not save encrypted pages to disk” setting.
Make sure “Use TLS 1.0” is checked.

Again you should only apply these changes if you are getting a black screen. I do NOT personally have these settings checked and am able to play EQ2 just fine. I’d even suggest reverting these changes after you get EQ2 to successfully patch once.

The Prison Server Experiment — Drunder

HMS Jersey Prison Ship circa 1782

From Windstalker on the EQ2 Forums:

Good day Norrathians!

We are very busy here on the EQII team and we have something coming up we wanted to make you aware of — a little experiment.

Later this week we plan to release a server we are calling “Drunder,” which is a “prison server.” What does that mean, exactly? Ultimately, players who are caught breaking our rules and disrupting EQ2 live server gameplay will be flagged for this server, and no others — ever. Characters on these accounts will be copied to Drunder (the “prison server”) and can never leave or transfer to another server.

This is a server our Customer Service Game Masters have requested over the years in order to manage disruptive players. They will determine who goes there. As gamers, we recognize there are some players who like to step outside our rules.

Upcoming Server Consolidations – Vote on YOUR New Server Name!

Written by Feldon on . Posted in EQ2, Game Updates & Maintenance, Grouping, PvP/BG/Proving Grounds

We have more details now about the upcoming Server Consolidation for EQ2 live servers, specifically which servers are merging where. To avoid confusion or “TL;DR”, we’ve prepared this handy guide to exactly what the server landscape will look like after this change:

Server-Merges-2015d
(updated on October 6th with the new server names)

There’s no word on how character names will be reserved, as that is probably still being hammered out, but the most notable news today will likely be that Nagafen is merging into Freeport and Permafrost. This is not really surprising given how few players were logged in even at peak hours (maybe 30-40?). Deathtoll has shown that PvP can be very popular in EQ2, if the ruleset is right and there are limits on travel convenience.

Here’s the announcement from Holly “Windstalker” Longdale on the EQ2 Forums:

Launchpad Issues Prevent Patching, Accessing EQ2 – August 18th UPDATED WITH FIX

Written by Feldon on . Posted in EQ2, Game Updates & Maintenance

We’ve got another UPDATE from EQ2 Technical Director Jenn Chan:

Update: The fix is currently being pushed out for this issue. Also some more information from the LaunchPad team.

LaunchPad will automatically update itself and when doing that there are a few things to call out:

– Launchpad will lose the saved information for “Remember Me” username and password. It will also lose the saved locale (this data was cookied in the old LP4). Once the old launchpad has been updated to the new version, you can re-set these options.
– We are not moving any of the file locations for current users so if they used the default location, the game files will still be in the \Sony Online Entertainment folder.
– If you were previously set to “Full Download” you will need to re-enable that once LaunchPad has updated. If you do not have the “Full Download” option then you were previously running the “Full Download Only” version will automatically stay in “Full Download”.

In short:

  • Your Logins/Passwords/Accounts have been forgotten by the Launchpad. You’ll need to reenter them.
  • Your launcher may have been switched from Full Download to Streaming. If so, click on Game Version and choose “Full Download”, close, and reopen the launcher. Otherwise you’ll download the entire 18GB game again.

VentureBeat: It’s Hard to Keep Secrets From EQ2 Players — Unraveling the Isle of Refuge and Far Journey Boat Tutorial

Written by Feldon on . Posted in EQ2, Game Updates & Maintenance, TLE/Prestige Servers

Popular tech blog VentureBeat has dropped a lengthy interview with members of the EverQuest II team to retrace how the Isle of Refuge newbie zone and Far Journey boat tutorial were resurrected, and then the ensuing shenanigans as the team tried to maintain the secret even as players stumbled upon more clues that what had once been deemed “impossible” was in fact going to launch just hours later.

While it was a team effort, ultimately we have EQ2 designer Carlos “Gninja” Mora to thank for performing archaeology on parts of EQ2 that hadn’t been seen in eight years, and for then recognizing that what at first seemed to be insurmountable roadblocks preventing the zones from running properly could be fixed. Months of hard work by a dedicated group (most of the EQ2 team has continued working full blast on this fall’s Campansion) led to an overwhelmingly successful launch of two Time-Locked Expansion Servers for PvP and PvE. We’ll never have the game as it was at launch, and how many would truly want that (spirit shards and subcombines anyone?), however enough changes and limits have been applied that thousands of characters have been created and played on the new TLE servers just in the last few weeks.

Without further ado, a few quotes from the VentureBeat article, which is a great read and can be found here:

“Malicious Threat” Prelude Event is Now Live Until September 16th!

Written by Feldon on . Posted in Art, Appearance, Housing, EQ2, Expansion News, Game Updates & Maintenance, Live Events

Early this morning, the “Malicious Threat” prelude event was activated on all EQ2 live (non-TLE) servers. This event will undoubtedly tie current events into this fall’s upcoming expansion, while giving some hints of what we can expect later this year. The prelude event was tested on the Test server and is now live until September 16, 2015.

Good players can start the “Malice in the Glade” quest in Greater Faydark while Evil players should start the “Malice in the Woods” version in Darklight Wood. Both quests start in Greater Faydark. These quest writeups are by Sigrdrifa. When the quest is completed, you may continue defeating Primordial Malice mobs to get arcane Malice baubles which are a currency to buy special House and Appearance items. Niami Denmother of EQ2Traders has posted a Guide to the event and screenshots of all the in-game items which may be purchased.

From the EQ2 Forums:

Will you confront malice in Norrath?

The mage house of Kelethin’s House of Falling Stars and Neriak’s Disciples of Innoruuk have both felt something disturbing a nearby location. They are looking for adventurers willing to investigate and help them uncover a threatening campaign being carried out. Players welcome in Neriak should speak with Virun D’Xyafin in Darklight Wood, while those that are welcome in Kelethin should speak with Miriel Tawnyglade in Greater Faydark.

This in-game event runs until Wednesday, September 16, 2015.

Server Consolidation to be Character/Guild Name Reserving “Free for All”? UPDATED!

Written by Feldon on . Posted in EQ2, Game Updates & Maintenance

inigo_montoyaxxx

Everything in yesterday’s EverQuest II Producer’s Letter by Holly “Windstalker” Longdale was a home run, with one exception:

Note that I wrote, “server consolidation” [rather than server mergers]. That’s not evasive language, but our approach. We think our best path is to consolidate some lower population servers into a new server and build a brand new server community from those players.

When asked what this means for existing character and guild names, Ry “Roshen” Schueller doubled down with this comment:

This won’t be an issue, because low population servers are being merged into a NEW server.

No names will be taken on the new server, and player names will be available on a first come basis. It should be pretty easy to grab a name on the new server before a ‘non-active player.’

Not surprisingly, this news has lit off a firestorm of concern from players who have built up eleven years of history. If indeed the new server is a “free for all” for guild and character names, then this will be a radical departure from what has been done with past server merges. We can only hope that there are some crossed wires here or that we don’t have the whole picture. Until we receive some kind of update, I’m going to hold out hope that this is what has occurred, because as-announced, this plan seems destined to create hurt feelings and precious few good experiences.

12:15pm PDT Update:

Windstalker has just responded with a clarification that, while not clearing up the naming policy, does ensure that characters will not lose any of their stuff…

On the server consolidation, don’t worry. We haven’t written the process and we are investigating server populations. Part of this work will include determining if duplicate names of guilds and characters are going to exist and how many. We will continue our plans based on all the information we can gather that will make it as smooth and as simple as possible to move your characters and ALL YOUR STUFF.

Don’t worry…we aren’t going to ham-hand this…(I’ve always wanted to use that word…).
