PC Gamer has been given an exclusive new trailer with the first footage of the upcoming Freeport Revamp. Here is their tongue-in-cheek description for the video:
Freeport. That’s a nice name. It conjures up warm feelings of boundless possibility – and maybe a bunny or two. It’s like a verbal hug. Now, though, it’s almost hilariously un-apt, because Freeport’s the most puppy-kickingly evil it’s ever been. I’m talking jagged spiky towers, ominous red skies, and batteries that run on souls. Seriously. The revamp’s coming to EverQuest II in Game Update 62, and you can find out all about it by watching the above video.
The video also features brief interviews with Jonathan “Prathun” Caraker, Design Lead for Freeport Revamp, Tim Heydelaar, Environment Lead for EQ2, Nathan “Kaitheel” McCall, EQ2 Designer, and Dave “Covic” Brown, Lead Character Artist.
GU62 Freeport Screen Grabs
We’ve taken some screen grabs of the trailer and provide them below. Please realize these were not provided to us by SOE and the quality is a bit soft compared to how they might look in-game.
The first thing you’ll notice is the new color palette, and eagle-eyed observers will notice that while the layout of Freeport remains largely unchanged, a good deal of carpentry and masonry work has been done to reshape and resculpt buildings and even walkways to flow more easily. Some buildings have left entirely, but new fountains and water features adorn the now unified city.
Totally cool! I might even buy a house in this new Freeport.
Very Kael color scheme.. honestly, I thought when they said revamp they meant they were changing more of the layout of the city than just re-skinning everything. It’s nicer, though.
It does look pretty good.
Praethun is a very good designer. He’s done some great zones before.
Ok, let me be the naysayer : I don’t like it. At all.
It’s a Neriak/Gorowyn layer put on Freeport which had a very different style.
Now, all 3 evil cities feel somewhat alike, in general style at least.
Having only good aligned characters, i don’t care that much but I absolutely dread the upcoming Qeynos “revamp” : it’s a beautiful city already ! Not in disarray, disrepair or anything and with a great style. Please SOE, don’t ruin it !
Qeynos has Nathan Ironforge however. Surely he can be moved to …. Freeport perhaps?
