EverQuest II Relaunches Free Trial — 14 Days, No Level Limit

Written by Feldon on . Posted in Free-to-Play (EQ2X)

One year ago, the EverQuest II Extended “Free-to-Play” service launched. In its wake, the EverQuest II Free Trial was unceremoniously discontinued. At Fan Faire, we learned that the Trial was coming back, and today it has.

Past trials have been very limited:

  • Play the Fae — A 7 day trial of one starting zone (Faydwer) and limited to level 20.
  • Trial of the Isle — A trial limited to level 6 on the Qeynos and Freeport starting islands.
  • Both had limited access to chat channels, private messaging, and joining groups and/or guilds.

Unlike those past trials, this one is a full 14 days and allows starting in any of the four current starting cities, as well as providing players access to every expansion except Destiny of Velious.

From EverQuest2.com:

The new EverQuest II trial offers you:

  • Two Weeks of Free Game Time – 14 free days to play, explore, quest, and socialize on one of our popular subscription servers. There’s no commitment as we don’t ask for your credit card information. After your two weeks of free game time, simply sign up for a subscription of your choice that fits your budget.
  • Jump into the Action with your Friends – Select any starting zone in Norrath and begin your adventure solo or with your friends.
  • Variety of Gameplay – There’s something for all play styles in EverQuest II! Whether you prefer Player vs. Player (PvP) or traditional Player vs. Environment (PVE) gameplay, we have you covered! Participate in exciting raids, dungeons, PvP battlegrounds, decorate your own house, craft, socialize with friends, and more!
  • Loot! Loot! – We’re giving you free stuff just for trying us out. You’ll get your very own Superior Experience potion, which will help you level up at a fast pace. Once used, it will give you an experience gain of an additional 100% for Tradeskill, Combat, and Advancements for two hours. You will also get a Green Journeyman’s Cloak (pictured above), which increases your speed by 25%.
  • Experience the Content – Enjoy the content from not only the base game, but also from the first seven expansions!

There has never been a better time to join EverQuest II! It’s free for the first 14 days, there’s no commitment, and you get free stuff. Come try it out and experience the legend unfold for a new hero – YOU!

Just go to http://everquest2.com/free_trial to get started.

We’re interested to know what restrictions will be in place for sending private messages, grouping, or joining guilds. In the past, these restrictions have been necessary as Trial accounts have been used in the past by Plat Farmers, Spammers, and the like. However they have a chilling effect on making the Trial the best possible introduction to EQ2 it can be.

Wrong tag! This trial is for the live subscription of EQ2 and not for EverQuest II Extended. It’s free (to play) at all 😉

I put that tag because it indirectly mentions EQ2X. But I’ve removed the tag cause it may lead to confusion.

To send tells to players they must have you on their friend list.

I’m not sure what the point is of including the first 7 expansions, since I doubt anyone could get past the first few in only 14 days (without help, at least). Unless they are suggesting someone could get to, say, Sentinel’s Fate content in a mere 2 weeks, in which case there’s no reason to continue past the 14 days. I would suspect it’s completely meaningless fluff for their advertisement. I would compare it to advertising that the speedometer on the average car goes up to 150 or so. Who cares? The majority of buyers would never utilize that “feature.”

The idea is that if they decide to keep playing and start paying the monethly fee, they get to keep all of the expansions that they have access too for free. This program has been around for quite sometime now, it was just not very well publicised as they were pushing the EQ2x aspect. I had a friend sign up last summer just after fan faire and he got the 14 day free trial and got to keep all of the expansions for free.
Anyway th eidea is to get them interested in playing by offering them all of the expansions except for the latest one for free. Then, once they are hooked, they have to buy the new one when it comes out to keep progressing and playing with their new friends.

For those who rolled a test account: Does voice chat work (if you are in the same group?). Did anyone check guilding? (since it is a very helpful travel method) And finally, is there any time limit on this? Does the opportunity have an expiration date for when you can START the 14 days?
