Unearthing Design Your Own Dungeon

Written by Feldon on . Posted in Expansion News, Grouping

SOE has been exceedingly tight-lipped about the upcoming EverQuest II: Age of Discovery expansion, now just 5-6 weeks away by our estimates. In the process of searching for any kind of official press releases, we found two sites which covered EverQuest II at Fan Faire that we hadn’t seen mentioned before.

Did you know that MMORPG.com interviewed Dave Georgeson about the EverQuest II: Age of Discovery expansion during Fan Faire?

Did you know GameTrailers did a 4:54 interview with Dave Georgeson at this year’s Fan Faire where he talks about Design Your Own Dungeon?

These screenshots were shown at Fan Faire, but photographing them off projection screens was our previous source for them.

WEll I read that article and say Smokejumber say this All this makes it the “biggest expansion pack ever made for any MMO by the time it’s finished

I got a laugh out of that statement. From what I read were getting freeport revamp, beastlord, and mercs (something I care not for), and as far as I know most folks dont want it.

The real question is, how much is this xpac? Are we headed back to the days of adventure pacs ever few months?,, I hope not.

Only thing I am not fond of atm is the fact your going to be taking a avatar through it and not your normal character. This was something I hated with the lavastorm daily shard mission.

I think he meant Velious, as the Velious expansion is technically continuing through mid-2013. The new dungeons and raids we get in Feb/March, and May of 2012 will be Velious dungeons. Qeynos Revamp is August 2012.

Main question for this functionality is this.

In that article, I read that I need to kill x number of Orc Shamans to get the Orc Shaman Spawn point.

Does that include what I already killed on this account? or will I have to send my army down to mass kill zones that players might be trying to level in/enjoy?

Does this also function for bosses? Will I need to kill Drusella Sathir to get her spawn point? What if I want to add in 4 Drusella spawns? Or 6 Sages?

Boss functions are going to be interesting.

If I have to grind another lifetime to have all the available pieces to build an interesting dungeon, count me out.

If the avatars are fun to play I’ll definitely test it, but I most certainly won’t grind the building blocks.

Hopefully the collectable pieces are tradable so those of us not interested in building dungeons can make some plat.

This will be a fail right out of the gate. It will be on the shelf right next to the Arena and battlegrounds. The main reason it will be fail will be avatars. Seriously, 10 years of getting emotionally attached to my character and now I have to play an avatar? Worse yet is usually the avatars in the game are silly, like the avatar in the TSO single shard quest for example, just something completely awkward and not fun to play.

I wouldn’t be surprised if SOE didn’t pull something like battlegrounds at launch, where the gear was virtually as good as x4 entry level raid gear, which made a lot of players gravitate towards battlegrounds where they normally would never have considered touching it. That’s my prediction, very nice gear, everyone will flock to it the first couple months, then it will fall flat very quickly and join the other fails on the shelf.

I never understood why instead of making new dungeon paradigms they just don’t fix the dungeons that are already here.

Personally I can’t wait for this feature to come along. I really am looking forward to trying to accomplish something different.

I just hope this dungeon designer allows us to really mix up different locations in one dungeon instead of an instance all looking the same perhaps we’ll be able to take one room from SoS and another room from VD: The Conservatory and or being able to place puzzles, pits and traps as well.

This would definitely make me want to return to EverQuest2 since it’s been almost 7 months since I have played

The top dungeon is the top floor of Crushbone Keep. You come up those stairs in the middle and take a left and follow it around you end up at the zone entrance to the DVinn Zone.

Yeah, I really don’t have more than a passing interest in this feature. The idea of running a pre-made avatar through these dungeons, in lieu of my character I’ve sweated blood & tears over for years just isn’t appealing. I think BYoD is a distraction that will be played and enjoyed for a few months, then will be largely forgotten about, much like arenas, & battlegrounds.

I think this tool would be more useful and interesting if dungeons were created with it by the player community, submitted to SOE for tweaking (nerfing) and then released as real, live content. I like the idea of ‘adventure packs’ being made by players that I can take my real toon through that don’t distract from main EQ2 lore (I wouldn’t want a player-made ‘Temple of Veeshan’ in Western Wastes for example), but player-made side adventures coming out every month or two would be cool to see.

Going the other way on this…I actually am pretty stoked about this idea! (Full Disclosure: I am a long-time and rather sadistic ‘The Sims’ player… 😈 )

Earning gear? That’s just gravy for me. I want to see what kind of crackmonkey dungeons I can put together…

The Dungeon Creator is designed so the EQ2 development team has less work to do. Nothing more, nothing less.

Seems a good way for them to get a “hall of fame” that they could sanitize into ‘real’ dungeons. If I understand it though…where will be NO customizing the actual zone….just plunking in furniture and mob spawn points, right?

I would much rather use my own toon. I might still play with the feature if avatars are all that’s planned but nothing serious. Having something else to collect is nice though and will add to the draw of this feature. I would like to hear from SoE if they plan to expand the DYOD to pcs at some point even if it’s not during initial release.

Another feature that within weeks will sit gathering dust seriously is this dev team so utterly without idea’s that they market this as an “expansions” stong point.

    Dear god.

Design Your Own Dungeon is a great idea, I’m just not sold on the idea of not being able to use my characters in them. I will certainly try it though, and look forward to what other players create. Being a fan of all the tremendous houses players have created over the years, I’m sure we’ll be seeing some really cool ideas.

For me where this fails is the likeliness of having to quest or grind out and unlock all the stuff to build the dungeon. If I decide one day I want to build the dungeon let me have all the tools to do so. Don’t artificially handicap me with some grind that is going to prevent me from ever using your feature.

The only reason i would buy this xpac would be to get more aa’s then again as Feldon had stated, if all we get is 50 more aa’s to spend on trees already given its worthless (though i think my bird can use more points /wink wink feldon)

    1) With that in mind I forgot where, but i know that some of the awards for these dungeons was our own pieces of armor right? Legendary only? Or fabled?

    2) I have seen lvl 100 spells dropping (steady bow) which seems like an upgrade for rangers!!!!

    3) The price if its 20 bucks then by all means release it, if its 30 to 45 bucks (“Release The Kracken”) as probably the left over players in already decaying servers will leave :(.

I like eq2 and thats why i came back to the game but as it stands right now
we might only have a couple of years left before soe reconsiders eq2.
