  1. I just don’t get why people feel they need to do stuff like this. Did they have an unhappy childhood? Did they get banned for cheating? Does it make them feel bigger about themselves? Just really sad that people have to do stuff like this.

  2. “UPDATE as of 8:00am: Games, Forums, and Census seem to be responding again. Things seem to be returning to normal.”
Just tried making a new character to see what servers are really up… and I’m only seeing 4. tried to make a new char on one of those 4….. Fail… TLE server is up tho.

    1. the reason for the attacks seems to be to promote their own ddos protection service. they seem to think that by bringing us down, they can force all of the games to employ them. this is coming from the creator of aura stresser – https://aurastresser.com/.

would a class action lawsuit help? i don’t know. worth a try. I reported them to twitter and to the fbi. but since they are not based in the usa, i don’t know what we can do to help.

  3. At 11:15 CST I saw this on the forums:

Status: 12/30/2015 8:58 PST – EQ2 Halls of Fate is currently down for maintenance.

No indication as to why and so far I don’t see any dev posts explaining anything further.

The EQ2 team would like to offer our thanks and appreciation to our fans, and our legendary player community! http://ow.ly/Wj5nr

  4. It seems that with the amount of money that we pay for every aspect of the game, the talent that we have in tech and design that there would be a way to stop these childish pranks. I think tougher hacking laws should be in place through out the world. These hackers run through foreign country i.p.’s where there is no law against hacking and get away with it. If anyone wants to start an organization to combat this…I have my ball bat and I’m ready to join.

    1. A DDOS attack doesn’t involve any hacking and is very hard to prevent. Put simply, it just involves making so many connections to a site/address that it overloads and crashes. Much like when EQ2 was at its height – servers went down after a big update when everyone tries to log back in at once & they couldn’t cope with the load.

The problem comes in how you determine genuine users attempting to connect (could be just to read a website, not even log in to something) and those that are malicious – they essentially look the same.

    2. You can’t fix stupid, and DDOS types are about as stupid as they get. :\ They can’t hack, and they have no friends/life, so they try to make others unhappy by interrupting their playtime (using programs and strategies designed by someone else, of course). Just your typical playground bully.
They probably got their asses (or ass) handed to them and threw a baby tantrum the way they heard other online assholes did in a “If I can’t be happy, no one can play with this toy either” fashion. :\
I’d be embarrassed to be associated with them… but I guess no one has to worry about that since, as I said, they most likely have no friends or social life out side of garnering attention like this. :\

  5. Well when the Netherlands allows a guy with over 50 cyber crimes get away with it why would anyone else not try? That aside, STEAM had some issues over the Christmas Holiday as well so not limited to DBG

    1. There’s no evidence that the Steam thing was caused externally – seems to have been a caching issue caused by a change they made themselves if you actually look into it. Who knows for sure, but the explanation makes perfect sense if you understand how Steam and it’s partners function together.

      1. Except that Steam have now claimed that the change they made was in order to deal with a DDOS attack.

One of the problems these days is distinguishing between the genuine “we’ve been hit by a DDOS attack” and the false “we screwed up so let’s blame it on a DDOS attack” reports.

      1. Yeah, they are idiots. They have far too much time on their hands. This is my daily leisure time, and what did we as subscribers do to these people to deserve being blocked from doing something we like just for their own misguided amusement?

  7. I’m not sure I understand the point of view. It doesn’t hurt Daybreak to do an attack like this. They’ve received their money and will most likely continue to do so. Its the player base who gets hammered. I guess that doesn’t matter to someone who just wishes to terrorize and destroy though. To them it doesn’t matter who gets attacked as long as the person doing the attacking is entertained for the moment?

  8. My bad, makes sense, DDOS attacks are pretty much impossible to stop I’m learning. I know you all will do the best you can and as quickly as you can. Hang in there, I’m rooting for you.

        1. The consolidations did not cause a single wipe. First of all login servers were always one server, secondly it happened with SOE as well long before consolidations. We all really need to stop blaming a company because of morons causing DDoS that’s like blaming the bank for being robbed so they have no cash on hand.
I don’t really like DBG, ok I like them hardly at all however this isn’t their fault

          1. There has been sustained server and network lag before this incidence, nothing new. How do you actually know that it is not daybreak’s fault, are you working there and have internal knowledge? The reason of the attack could be related to events we are unaware of. Hard to tell the truth unless you get hold of persons responsible which even then must be truthful. Most of the stories are unapproved theories.

          2. It’s not a theory, it is an official statement from the company and you don’t need internal knowledge for common sense. The fact they reported that this was an attack will now require an investigation into who and where this came from requiring man hours and money. If they did indeed cry fowl in order to hide a slip up from inside, the company would be in a lot of hot water and legal ramifications..

      1. All Daybreak games use the same Authentication server and thus they just have to attack the one Auth server to take down all games. The Actual game servers themselves have different IP’s and I have no trouble accessing them, its the fact that you cant authenticate that is screwing things up. Another good reason to NEVER put multiple games Auth Server as the same IP and server. This would not be an issue if each game had its own Auth server with the same Seed server

    1. Rift/Trion Worlds, Blizzard, SOE, and most gaming companies last year when LizardSquad wanted to ruin Christmas for everyone, claiming people should be spending time with their families and not in a game. Also, Blizzard a couple of years ago when some kid got mad that he kept getting killed in some shitty blizzard game. Starcraft because some kids pro gamer lost a competition. “I only ever hear about these attacks effect SoE/Daybreak” just means these are the only ones you bother to read about

  9. They have too much time on their hands AND they know that a lot of players are off work due to holidays & school. I don’t think they want to hurt Daybreak, I think they want to make the players angry. As someone else mentioned, it looks to me like they got their butts kicked all over the place in H1Z1 so now they’re “getting back” at those players by DDoSing the server cluster. Poor babies, I guess it’s just way too difficult to try to improve your game? I hope they get caught & have all their internet access removed. Like, forever.

  10. Okay so 20 meg file in eq2 file worked for EQ2 …what about EQ.
I’m fishing in Everfrost Peaks and need to get on with it for FF quest.
What file do I look for in EQ (original game) parent folder to bypass the launcher ? Anyone ?

  11. I saw this being discussed in an EQ Twitch stream. You can bypass the EQ1 patcher by creating a shortcut to eqgame.exe and adding the command parameters: patchme /login:charname

So the full command would look something like this …
    “C:\Program Files (x86)\Daybreak Game Company\Installed Games\EverQuest\eqgame.exe” patchme /login:charname

  12. The apparent attacker was boasting yesterday about the attack from Twitter @aura_stresser ~~ Apparently, Twitter shut them down there, now the boasts are coming from @TheProxseas

Why on earth does every frakkin script kiddie target EQ2? Moreover, why hasn’t DBG started utilizing the services of one of the several companies that provide protection vs. DDOS?

    I just wanna play!

  13. I guess it all depends on how daybreak handles the attack. I personally got a boost in ps2 to add to the holiday hat boost and if my time runs out while I can’t even play I’d be just as annoyed with daybreak as i am with the attackers
