This is it boys and girls! EverQuest II has begun migrating to EDB, and the first server up is Nagafen. If all goes well, then presumably we’ll start see the other servers migrate. From the EQ2 Forums:
The Nagafen server will be brought offline on Thursday, March 19, 2015 at 2:00AM Pacific* for server migration and maintenance. This server is estimated to be unavailable for at least 12 hours.
Keep an eye on the EverQuest II forums and social media for status updates and for news if additional downtime is needed.
and from Holly “Windstalker” Longdale on Twitter:
Nagafen server will be our first database conversion tomorrow from 2am to 2pm PDT. Hopefully it will be up sooner! #eq2

I hope that this was well tested on beta! PVP abilities, zoning to and from Battlegrounds, etc. I hope all goes well. I’m surprised they got around to doing this so quickly after announcing it.
Bit surprised too considering they made such a big deal about how complicated it was but they they’ve also mentioned they’ve been prepping for it for a while too.
I’d love to hear more statistics about this sort of stuff (database size, table sizes, the technical difficulties of moving from whatever platform they were on to whatever they’ve moving too etc) so we’d have a better idea of the kind of challenges they’re facing.
And hey… if this helps fix the lag problems, I might actually do a little dance.
They’re moving database from Oracle to EnterpriseDB. I’m hoping to do an interview.
It does seem quick.
Are these moves for performance increase or to open up options for cross server stuff?
I’d say both. There’s probably a decent licence cost saving as well for moving away from Orrible.
All of that, sure, but mostly to get away from Oracle’s licensing fees.
at my last it job we paid oracle 175k a month in license fees. However we had 5k employees. I would be they were paying at least 30k a month. I know it all depends on how many server farms you have I know they charge for each little thing.
How did the move go?
so I guess if this went well when are the rest of us getting moved to enterprise database?
