My first in-game experience with an EQ2 Guide took place early in my playing career in Kelethin. A particularly threadbare patron was in need of crafted clothes, so I (and more than a few others players) sprang into action and crafted an appropriate garment. In return, I was given a robe with a unique pumpkin orange and black appearance which was only available through the quest. I wore it for quite a while, not as a fashion statement, but because I thought player-run events like this were cool and memorable. Remember too that this was back when there weren’t nearly the wide selection of armor appearances there are today.
Fast forward and while Guide quests are often known for “milk and cookies”, there are other rewards and more elaborate quests out there. The most elaborate being the recently added Nebulous Newsies quest which awards some 5 million status and a unique 66 slot bag! When a Guide signs in to offer this quest (in Cardin Ward of Obol Plains), it is almost as talked about in public chat channels as Public Quests were in the day! So how do you know when a Guide quest will be happening next? Well there isn’t an official calendar (I’ve asked!) but there are Guide update threads for each EQ2 server where members of the Guide program announce their upcoming engagements.
From Ashlanne on the EQ2 Forums:
Where are the Guides? What are they doing right now? Who is running an event on your server?

My characters grew up on The Bazaar server, which had NPC ‘guide events’ because it was the Exchange Server and regular Guide Events were not allowed. I am now following this thread so I will know when real Guide Events take place.

Besides the Nebulous Newsies another good guide event is the one in the withered lands, Techgnical Difficulties, that awards you the Clockwork Assassin. A fun item to put in a guild hall.

I’d like to add that, for those players that don’t know, theses are volunteers. Regular players that volunteer to ad some life to the game by RPing a quest NPC, basically. I’ve seen far too many people whine and complain that SOE was wasting time and money by doing these events while there were so many other things that needed to be fixed. (Or worse, tore into the Guides themselves for every thing SOE ever did to offend.)
So yah, not only are these players volunteering time to make things more fun for the population of the server they are Guides on, but they are AMAZING at letting these misinformed people’s anger (Or trolls immature attempts at.. whatever the heck trolls see as a goal…) just roll off their backs and keep on keepin on as Guides. ^_^
And a huge thank you from me to all the guides on every server. ^_^
I’d just like to say we have great guides on Guk. I couldn’t imagine myself doing what these people do.
i remember my first meeting with a guide – and I was thinking how cheerful they seemed
I couldn’t do it.
I love guide events. Wish I had the time to apply and be one too!
Fun fact, an old guide from Storms tried to get back in the program.
Problem: when you get back, you’re back at apprentice stage, even if you were a full guide, or even a senior guide.
Second problem: as no senior guide speaks french, no senior guide can train a new guide.
SoE could choose to bypass the need to re-train to allow a lone and empty server to get back a guide? They could send an english senior to do a quick check before re-instituting the old guide? Seems that no, it’s way better to let a server be guide-less (and not even listed in the list, despite having its thread: https://forums.station.sony.com/eq2/index.php?threads/storms.539112/ ).
