  1. (a) this is standard practice for a US holiday weekend.

    (b) there’s no indication that EQ2 is being moth-balled.

Neither comment should be taken as supporting SOE at this time, the problems they currently face are largely self-inflicted through their decision to make their games appealing to the US players only, and the way in which they conduct their customer management more generally.

  2. @Mentin do u play eq2 what makes u think it being mothballed. What u think EQN is going to kill Eq2 well Eq2 didn’t kill Eq1 so I know Eq2 will not die to EQN which is about 2 years away I would say I know Landmark would be out first but that is not a Swords and Sorcery MMO it just a Developmental tools and Scenery MMO

    1. There are degrees of Mothballing.

It is only natural that as a mmorpg product ages, it will have less players, leading to less income, leading to less developers on it, leading to less new content, leading to less players. It is an ever downgoing cycle as a game ages and its technology gets outdated.

Vanguard seems to have lost two of three developers with this and truly must be said to be mothballed 🙂

EQ2 seems to have lost 2 of 5 game designers. While not mothballing at the Vanguard level, that cut in developer resources certainly will hurt coming GUs both in number and content.

I do play eq2 and I do love it. But that does not mean I am blind to the downward evolution of the game. There are ever less players in game year by year. Less actively raiding guilds on guildprogress.

A development cut on this scale would have caused mass noise a few years back, yet this time it has been pretty silent. Which is a symptom of less players and less really active players.

As for EQN, I guess it will be the normal procedure when a new mmorpg launches: part of the population of EQ2 leave for greener pastures, and some of them find out the grass was not so green anyways and come back. But not all come back.

The launch of EQN-L, EQN and ESO most definitely will contribute to the further attrition of EQ2 player numbers.

EQ1 has lasted way beyond anyones expectation I think, and I see no signs of immediate shutdown of EQ2 either. Vanguard might be on life support though.

      1. Well…more like 1.5 designers (I think Patherpanchali was shared with EQ) plus ” another name which I absolutely cannot report” (Feldon on the Flames Forum).

Confirmed still there (because they’re still posting on the forum): Endymion, Fyreflyte, Kaitheel, Extemper, Kander, Caith and Chrol.

        Unknown status: Zoltaroth.

        Gone: Gninja, Patherpanchali
