This weekend the EQII Marketplace will be featuring an Instant Rebate sale where you’ll be able to get deep discounts on most items in the store. With minor exceptions* all Station Cash items in the Marketplace will receive at least a 50% rebate.

How does a rebate work? Once you purchase one of the items eligible for Instant Rebate, you’ll receive a refund of 50% of your Station Cash used to purchase an item moments after the transaction!

Need Station Cash? Visit the Station Cash page for information and learn how you can purchase SC online or from a retailer near you.

This sale runs Friday 6/28/13 – Sunday 6/30/13 (ending at 11:59 PM PDT).

*Excludes experience items, services, and new items added in the past 30 days. Does not affect in-game currency costs. Excludes expansions, memberships, Krono, and any other items not available for SC.

Maybe it’s just me, but why does SOE do these rebates? Why not just lower the price on the items like they so during a regular sale (which they do too)? If it was for real money I could see it could be an accounting/tax thing but for fake money? I’d rather just see a sale than this overly complicated way of discounting stuff. Marketing gimmick? I know ultimately it makes no difference, the item costs the same, but it does seem really odd. Maybe this sort of thing is more common in the US in general?

The word “rebate” is a more commonly used sales buzzword, definitely. But this rebate sale does have a bit of a catch to it.

Let’s say an item costs 2000 normally. With a half price sale, if you ONLY had 1000 SC, you could buy it. In this case, you need the 2000 SC first, then you get half back.

The cost is the same, but if you don’t have that 2000 SC, then you’re forced to buy more so you can buy the discounted item. You’ll still have 1000 SC left over, but SOE got you to buy more SC.

I wondered when they were going to remove being able to buy services on sale. Extra character slots were so cheap on sale that you could easily get 10-20 of them if you wanted to. Either they removed that a while ago and i’m just oblivious (Highly possible and likely) or this is a new thing.

Well, they did just have a service item sale a few weeks ago. Wasn’t 50% off, but there were still some pretty good discounts. If you’d saved up double and triple SC, they were still a good deal.

What I found sucked was the fact that they took away the ability to gift character slots. They lost out on several sales on that one. I wanted to buy them for my kids but was not about to put a full card on each of their accounts just for a character slot.
