Another Day Another DDoS Attack — Day 3!

Written by Feldon on . Posted in EQ2, Game Updates & Maintenance

It seems that an H1Z1 player who is unsatisfied with a certain ruleset did not get their fill with last night’s disruption of Daybreak Games and have decided to DDoS the company once again. Due to Daybreak’s interconnectedness, when one game is affected, all services are impacted. Updates as we have them…

Update: EQ2 servers should now be up and available after the extended downtime.

After the jump, the timeline of events…

EQ2 servers are still down for scheduled maintenance. However all other Daybreak games are affected by a continuing DDoS which has been confirmed by Daybreak on Facebook:

We are aware of ongoing server issues that are causing latency and/or login problems. Thank you for your reports. A DDoS is impacting our network traffic in a significant way. We are working to mitigate it as soon as possible, but we cannot give a firm estimate as to how long that will take.

The teams who are capable of fixing the issue are hard at work on it.

Update as of Tuesday June 14 @ 9am PDT, the attacks have resumed:

Update from last night:

Update:

From the EQ2 Forums:

Status: 6/13/2016 17:43 PDT – We are currently investigating a potential issue with network connectivity to the game.

This is what happens when DoSers get slaps on the wrist by their own law enforcement, they are given no reason not to be a douche and a loser when their country will protect them from the law of the country the crime was committed.

I just think it’s sad that every time EQ2 gets hosed with these DDoS attacks it’s because someone is attacking H1Z1. Could we PLEASE just separate out the EQ2 servers already so that we stop getting screwed?
We’ve already got a small enough player base as it is. It would be nice if stuff like this didn’t increase the likelihood that people are going to just pack up and move on.

What are DoS and DDoS Attacks?
    https://www.wired.com/2016/01/hacker-lexicon-what-are-dos-and-ddos-attacks/
“The online gaming industry has also been plagued with DDoS attacks for several years, with the blame going to disgruntled players and even to competitors. A number of DDoS-for-hire services, for examples, will take down a competitor’s website for any business that wants to hire them.”

“In truth, DDoS attacks alone are an annoyance to web users and can cost a company lost business during the time they deny access to customers, but they’re fairly easy to defend against. When used in conjunction with a data breach or some other nefarious activity they can certainly assist in the success of that breach, but they hardly qualify as catastrophic or a worst-case scenario under anyone’s definition of the term.”

ALTHOUGH the caveat for “easy to defend against” is IF given sufficient resources.

    For example:

Major DNS provider hit by mysterious, focused DDoS attack
    http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/05/major-dns-provider-hit-by-mysterious-focused-ddos-attack/

“NS1 CEO Kris Beevers told Ars that the attacks were yet another escalation of a trend that has been plaguing DNS and content delivery network providers since February of this year. “This varies from the painful-but-boring DDoS attacks we’ve seen,” he said in a phone interview. “We’d seen reflection attacks [also known as DNS amplification attacks] increasing in volumes, as had a few content delivery networks we’ve talked to, some of whom are our customers.”

Not that these folks are getting away with it…

Those were probably the hours that snot nosed script kiddie wasn’t losing, then he lost, threw a tantrum, and began DDOSing again.
Times like these I wish it were legal to cull asshats from the breeding population, maybe send em off to a desert island with no internet.

Wondering if DDoS well get them to nerf summoners!

So it’s like raiding with 4 summoner then? Haha. If people were better about securing and updating their pc the DDoS botnets would be smaller.
I’d love to see them spool up instances on azure or ec2 that’s located geographically for best performance of people in zone. Plus those platforms have built in DDoS protection. Lag has been pretty unbearable in raids lately with many folks just opting to not show up. It makes puppies cry.

keeping your OS up to date on security updates is common sense, except common sense seems to be dying out.

I have a feeling this might be related (since it looks like a group attack), but have you seen the Steam page of EQ Landmark? So many bad ratings for such a creative game that I like a lot. When you read the reasons them it usually revolves around bad customer support. Which I think is a terrible reason. You should rate a game based on the quality of the game.

It’s absolutely appropriate to factor customer service into a game review, as it can make or break a game. If something goes wrong and it can’t or won’t be resolved by CS, it can completely ruin your experience.

So rather then take your business elsewhere if you* are unhappy with the company you are going to throw a tantrum and try to prevent others from playing?

If this was a physical space issue I view it as the equivalent of the difference between not doing business with them and deciding to try to riot in front of the store because you don’t like what they do.

*By you in this post I’m more refering to the position taken not to imply you as an individual are the cause of this attack or anything else.
