New “Character Memories” Feature Slips to Live

Written by Feldon on . Posted in EQ2, Game Updates & Maintenance

Over the last couple of days, players have noticed their game client taking screenshots of certain Achievements and other in-game activities. It looks like this was an in-development feature which slipped to live a bit prematurely. From Dave “Maevianiu” Kish on the EQ2 Forums:

Oh snap! This one is my fault. It got “pulled along for the ride” with the performance increases. It wasn’t ready for live and I’m personally sorry for this one.

This feature isn’t finished yet, so I’ll be turning it off with the next hotfix. I am very sorry for it sneaking out like this, again it was my mistake.

The idea was that your character would have memories, they could be the first time they defeated an epic monster, completed an achievement, did an epic quest, etc. And there would be an option to turn it off. Its going to take a hotfix to fix this one so please bear with me on it for a bit.

and:

As a bit of an Easter Egg you guys can manually make this happen with the command /cl_screenshot_character_memory FileName

That will create a file named “FileName.jpg” with the screenshot in it. That will continue to work after the hotfix. The automatic doing of it will stop after the hotfix. And the hotfix is planned for Thursday, not set in stone, but targeting Thursday.

I know I still have the screenshots of getting my Epic Weapons on my various characters, and I think people will use this as a scrapbook feature, especially if they can add some things in line a headline text with your character name and what achievement or event triggered the screenshot.

That is a really nice little idea, it’s a pity something like this had been in from day one, would have allowed for some awesome documents of a characters virtual life – especially as some of them are now approaching 10 years old. But it’s never too late.

Someone could even put together some sort of EQ2 scrapbook website where you could upload these screenshots, and add your own personal running text commentary to them to create a virtual diary / blog of your EQ2 characters existence. Wouldn’t get everyone excited I know and maybe the ship has sailed already, but I think a lot of people would enjoy something like that, rp’ers might especially get a kick out of it, and it would be interesting to browse through other peoples ‘scrapbooks’.

Exactly what I was thinking. It’s a bit late in the day adding this after 10 years 🙁

Vanguard had this feature at launch. It was excellent. Surprised no-one thought of stealing it sooner.

I love this idea! XD So many times I wished after the fact that I’d gotten a screenshot.
I’m thinking the reason SOE is doing this till now and not 10 years ago is a combination of technology catching up/being more available (nothing sadder than a minimum graphics setting screenshot that looks like playdough), the code fixes to improve how the game runs, etc…

I think it’s a great idea! I have been grabbing screenshots for years and this memory book thing is super. Of course there are the conspiracy theorists who love to blow things out of proportion freaking out on the forums )) Meh.

Thank you Maevianiu for giving us this feature and it will be nice to see the finished gem.

Simple but it is going to be a very appreciated idea, so often we miss hitting that screenshot key for a first boss kill… Looking forward to seeing it in the game.

My system took a few screenshots of my BL hitting 90 and such. I had that toon on autofollow though. So it was just a screenshot of her tail. Got a couple of a troub I PL’d with some shinies. I like this feature, and wish it would have been around much longer,
