First PlayerStudio Items Come to EQ2

Written by Feldon on . Posted in Player Studio

Frostfell is not the only special occasion in EverQuest II today, as the first two Player-made items will be appearing in-game as well. We can look forward to a Heroic Salesman’s Crate and a Cloak of the North Star. This news comes to us via MJ at Massively who was provided with screenshots of both items.

PlayerStudio, announced this October in the leadup to the annual SOE Live Las Vegas developer-player pow-wow, is a program which allows players to design, create, and submit finished in-game artwork and models which are then made available on the StationCash Marketplace. These two example items are from first two categories of allowed items — Cloaks and House Items. We have been advised to expect more item types including hair styles (many players have expressed interest in creating hats that don’t render the player bald), as well as pre-decorated houses, and more depending upon the quality and popularity of the program.

Oakbane of Butcherblock created the Heroic Salesman’s Crate and shared screenshots of this stunning new chest artwork over on EQ2Flames. I know I was immediately impressed at how visually attractive the chest was compared to most of the relatively bland in-game chests we’ve had access to thus far.

PlayerStudio’s revenue sharing scheme splits a generous 40% of the proceeds with players for each PlayerStudio item sold. This compares favorably to other player-made content ecosystems such as the 25% share in Team Fortress 2.

This Saturday, we’ll hear more about PlayerStudio as Massively’s Karen Bryan interviews  Rick Reynolds, SOE’s Senior Manager of E-Commerce and Joe Shoopack, Director of Artistic Development for her weekly EQ2-focused Tattered Notebook column. Reynolds and Shoopack have been the point men on navigating the shark-infested legal waters of allowing player-submitted content, as well as clearing any other roadblocks necessary to get PlayerStudio up and running. We look forward to many more player-made items in the 2 (soon to be 3) categories allowed so far, as well as future categories such as weapons, and just maybe one day in the distant future — armor.

Now that is a very nice crate! Though personally, after looking at the cloak, I don’t much care for it. It is a very nice design, but I am somewhat obsessed with shiny things 🙂

    Arsonance,

Similar != the same. Yes there are a lot of similarities, but it’s still a new item. The model and texture are both quite different.

Initially, I thought there was talk of player-designed equipment with stats created by devs. I had assumed this was there way of introducing a new type of pay-to-win item to the market place (player made appearance + raid or better item quality), but if the items are merely going to be appearance…I’m pleasantly surprised. I agree that the chest is beautiful. That’s something I’d like to loot!

While the model itself does look pretty similar in geometry, I think both are pretty standard “treasure chests” in the context of fantasy video games. A quick google image search of “wooden treasure chest” brings up several generic illustrations and photographs of actual chests with similar metalwork and detail.

That being said, I think this one is much classier looking. =)

this is not a salesman crate, just furniture (it’s in the Furniture section of the SC lists), I did buy it but it will not go into the sales vault area, it’s actually called Heroic Ornate Chest.

Thanks Keek. The Heroic Salesman’s Crate is the text I got from Massively.
