EQ2 Player Studio Adds Weapon, Shield, Hair Style Categories

Written by Feldon on . Posted in Player Studio

Today, Player Studio introduces three new categories of items which can be submitted to EverQuest II — Weapons, Shields, and Hair Styles.

As with all PlayerStudio items, Weapons and Shields have very specific design parameters that must be followed to be accepted into the world of Norrath.

This includes a maximum number of triangles (1,000), texture resolution, level of detail, etc. Weapons and Shields are submitted with at least 3 textures or “maps”, with an optional 4th map.

  • Diffuse (color) map — This is the design or “painting” on the item
  • Normal map — This is the relief of the item, adding additional depth and surface details
  • Specular map — This is the shiny map, with light parts shining when exposed to light
  • Fresnel map (optional) — This map determines which parts of the object should use the environment map to simulate reflective surfaces. Particularly effective for glassy or polished metallic surfaces.

From the EQ2 Forums:

For weapons, artists are currently able to design one-handed hammers, maces, daggers, swords, axes, and wands, as well as two-handed large swords, axes, hammers, maces, monk staffs, and halberds.

First Animated Player Studio Item comes to EQ2

Written by Feldon on . Posted in Daybreak Cash, Player Studio

Since the launch of the Player Studio program, EQ2 players exercising their hobby (or career) as gifted artists and 3D designers have deluged the EQ2 team with Cloak and House Item submissions. What was originally intended as a “maybe 4-5 items a month” thing has turned into a very popular program as these not-so-amateur designers continue to impress the EQ2 team with their creativity and attention to detail.

Perhaps no better evidence of this is today’s introduction of the first animated Player Studio item. Although Player Studio has not released any instructions on how to animate items, a player’s submission of a Tinkered house item must have caught the attention of the EQ2 team because they have added several right-click animations to it and even produced a video showing these animations.

Today’s Player Studio haul includes visually intense cloaks, a throne that would look right at home in a Freeport cellar, and the aforementioned Tinkered wagon. We can’t wait to see the Weapons and player Hair Styles people come up with when those categories are added to the Player Studio program.

From the EQ2 Forums:

These Marketplace items have all been designed by artists in Player Studio! Tim MathewsVandrago, and Cambrian Man created this week’s items.

The items created by Tim Mathews should appeal to those with a darker view of the world. These dramatic pieces are designed with the most evil Norrathians in mind.

I had every confidence that Player Studio would demonstrate the creativity and artistic talent of EQ2 players, but I continue to be impressed by what is being approved and added on an almost weekly basis.

From EverQuest2.com:

Four new cloaks created by a player — Lyranny — are now available in the Marketplace!

First PlayerStudio Items Come to EQ2

Written by Feldon on . Posted in Player Studio

Frostfell is not the only special occasion in EverQuest II today, as the first two Player-made items will be appearing in-game as well. We can look forward to a Heroic Salesman’s Crate and a Cloak of the North Star. This news comes to us via MJ at Massively who was provided with screenshots of both items.

PlayerStudio, announced this October in the leadup to the annual SOE Live Las Vegas developer-player pow-wow, is a program which allows players to design, create, and submit finished in-game artwork and models which are then made available on the StationCash Marketplace. These two example items are from first two categories of allowed items — Cloaks and House Items. We have been advised to expect more item types including hair styles (many players have expressed interest in creating hats that don’t render the player bald), as well as pre-decorated houses, and more depending upon the quality and popularity of the program.

First Takes: ‘Chains of Eternity’ Expac, PlayerStudio

Written by Feldon on . Posted in Commentary, Expansion News, Game Updates & Maintenance, Player Studio

Today brought a double helping of news for players of EverQuest II, and I wanted to share a few thoughts I’ve got on each subject.

EverQuest II: Chains of Eternity

After a features expansion, and then a “guspansion”, Chains of Eternity puts us back on track with a content expansion. This time around, we’ll see Guild, Tradeskill, and Adventuring Level Caps all raised to 95. We’ll also see more expansion in the Prestige AAs tab with new abilities for each Subclass. Also new in the expansion will be Prestige Tradeskills for crafters wanting to specialize their trade.

A truly new feature is Organic Adornments which sound interesting in that they may further streamline itemization. For the last couple of years, War Runes have been the be-all-end-all of adornments. Once you had won the rights to your desired Red “War Rune” adornment, you had it forever, and could always pick up more for your alts. However as expansions and guspansions go by and player power explodes, some of the older Red adornments have become outdated. If Organic Adornments truly grow with their players, then maybe adornments will stay relevant rather than requiring constant maintenance from the EQ2 designers.

PlayerStudio — Player Made Items for the EQ2 Marketplace

Written by Feldon on . Posted in Player Studio

From EverQuest2.com:

EverQuest™ II players are some of the most dedicated, emotionally invested players in any virtual world. For the first time, EverQuest II players have the opportunity to create parts of our world by designing new in-game items.

Player Studio™ is a new program that invites (initially US-based) players to download sample geometry, learn how virtual items are constructed, and try designing items. You can try your hand at writing a creative name, item description, and rationale for how it fits into the ongoing storyline.

Selected items will be offered for sale in the SOE Marketplace alongside items created by staff artists, priced in SOE’s Station Cash virtual currency. Revenue from the sale of these items will be shared back with the creative player.

The program is not yet officially running, but you can read up and even start creating items now. More information will be released at SOE Live 2012 in Las Vegas, NV.
