From the EQ2 Forums:

Welcome to Isle of Refuge.

No, not THAT Isle of Refuge. Well, not quite anyway. This Isle of Refuge is a new special server launching on Tuesday, June 28, 2016.

How will this server be different from Live servers or other special servers (such as TLE Progression and Event servers)? Here’s how:

Isle of Refuge is what we call a “Free Trade Server.” This means that almost all items can be traded freely between players. There are a few exceptions – Heirloom items purchased via a merchant or in the marketplace, granted from repeatable quests, or received via /claims will remain Heirloom.

When Isle of Refuge launches, there will be no transfers allowed on or off Isle of Refuge. This is a new Norrathian community being formed, and we want you all to have the opportunity to build relationships and a thriving player economy. There are no plans to EVER allow transfers off the Isle of Refuge server, though we may open transfers TO this server at a future date. While we’ll have news regarding transfers to Isle of Refuge in the future, at launch all characters will begin a new journey on the server.

A few other things to note about Isle of Refuge:

  • There will be limited account bonuses and/or claims at the launch of the Free Trade Server.
  • There will be no Battlegrounds access on the Free Trade Server.
  • To play on the Free Trade Server, you must be an All Access Member.

This has been vetted on other forums and consistently seen negative feedback. Sounds like someone with their head in the clouds has sold this idea to seniors in hopes to pad their resume.

Yah… but everything get’s craploads of negative feedback. XD There’s no way to tell any more! 0.0

Remember that one NOTD they mailed us free items and all that was voiced about it was from people were offended that the charges weren’t unlimited on the illusion item? XD

I’ll never understand SoE (idc they’ll always be that in my heart) and its decision making. The game is rapidly dying and now they’re pushing in niche servers that will need to be populated from the start. I don’t play this game anymore, but like a concerned family member, I do like to visit the hospital bed and check up from time to time.

If I had to guess, I’d say they saw how much money the TLE servers brought it and are trying to replicate that. I don’t think Daybreak has any interest in improving the long term health of the game.

I just don’t get it anymore. These things seem like wasted resources that nowhere close to enough people will use to make the investment worth it. So, why exactly is DBG doing this? Does anyone even know? I can’t figure it out.

I know people hate negativity, but this is a disaster that has been in the works for a while now. From the minute DBG took the helm, the clear priority has been quick cash grabs over quantity and quality. They will push this agenda until it no longer works and then unapologetically sunset the game.

DO not understand the idea or goal you are trying to accomplish. You are not giving people what they want from what I have read and heard in chat. You are segregating players and that isn’t right. The mix of people we have on Skyfire is a good combination. We have questers and crafters alike and help each other with their unique qualities. You take that away and you will have a disaster. I am always doing a little bit of everything depending on my mood and if I am forced to go to one of these NEW servers I don’t know what I will do. people who craft aid the raiders as they want to decorate but would rather raid so they hire a crafter to do it and when a crafter wants to group/raid they get with the raiders or a pug. You separate them and this will not happen. I see a serious decline in your future if you go with this as a forced move.

Did I miss something? Where did they say anything about it being forced?

Yeah I don’t get it either. Especially considering that Race to Trakanon is a temporary server.

/shrug Maybe it’s a test to see if making nearly everything tradeable/brokerable would work, then they add it to all servers. (And hopefully add cross server travel instead of merge that server too.)

The broker lag would be my biggest worry. Maybe they’ll fix that for the sake of the “free trade” server and it’ll get patched into live. Some good will come of it. ^_^

They have the extra servers. They might as well try out things to see what does and doesn’t work.

Six or seven years ago I probably would have given this a chance, or even if the option existed at launch. It’s no different than Eq1 was when endgame gear was not attuneable and completely tradeable.

This idea should have been done since the beginning. This is what made my Kunark days of EQ1 so great with tunnel trading and so forth. The broker I believe ruined it for me because you never had to invest the time in talking with people and bartering hence stretching out gameplay. Instead, the game was built around grinding out to max level and bitching about not having enough content.
