Game Update 66: Cobalt Scar Crafting Guide at ZAM!

Written by Feldon on . Posted in Game Updates & Maintenance, Tradeskill

From EQ2 Zam:

EverQuest II’s lastest game update, Scars of the Awakened, is right around the corner with new content for Norrathian crafters! Be sure to take your artisan to Cobalt Scar where Acting Supplymaster Grant could use a hand. Along the way you’ll help the Othmir, save the day at the main camp, and help a mysterious dark elf. Your reward is a nifty set of gloves handed down the Bayle line. Be sure to check out our Cobalt Scar Crafting Series guide and the shopping list so you’re not shy on resources.

Level 95 crafters will find that their Apprentices have some new ideas and need new equipment to get the job done. The new researched recipes will use Tier 10 resources and are set up so that while they require more reactants, those reactants aren’t as hard to come by as they are in the level 80 recipes.

Tier 10 recipe books are being renamed to be consistent with other tiers. With GU66 all volumes will be available on the usual merchants, although the Advanced ones are quite expensive. It’s important to note that you can still get these recipes adventuring and questing, and you don’t have to buy them from an NPC to obtain them.

Game Update 66, Scars of the Awakened, is slated to hit live servers Tuesday April 30. Be sure to log in this weekend and get some of that bonus experience!

    crafting is essentially bullcrap.
most professions are obsolete, eg weaponsmith, armorer especially since they have no way to create anything unless they are a raid-guild’s sweety and receive all the mats, many guilds simply confiscate these and they end up making gear for the upper class of the guild, just to get an upgrade of 3 STA or something ludicrous, while the normal raiders get the short stick.

most other professions become obsolete after you made your Expert-spells.
the only useful jobs are long time – making food, making housing stuff, and arrows.

@NYNA … same as it ever was. SOE (and indeed most, if not all game publishers) do not believe it is desirable for crafters to be able to make gear that is on a par with, or better, than the best that can be obtained in other ways (raiding). Whenever some recipe comes out that almost bridges the gap you can stand assured that the mats required will be effectively unobtainable to crafters. SOE, Blizzard, TRION etc all adhere to this policy and from the screams of outrage and pain on the forums whenever the gap is in danger of closing, they are reflecting the views of the player base.

Maybe crafting will have a more central place in EQNext, but somehow I doubt it.

Sorry to interupt you, but why should crafted gear be better exactly? So the crafters feel good? Why would anybody run content if crafted gear was better? The only solution that is valid because it keeps crafting and adventuring valuable is the one you shunned: make crafted gear desirable but keep the incentive to group/raid by making the necessary components drop of mobs.

at least they should change the drops in raids in a way so that no raid leader can steal them for themselves, in fact they should change all the raid loot into tokens that you can trade at the dungeon entrance into gear or mats or whatever…

I think they could make weaponsmith, armorer useful by giving them the job to sharpen weapons who got dull, sell weapons & armor cleaning sets, remove dents, etc…
eg. after 20 deaths if you dont do it your gear looses 10% stats until you fix it, or something like that.

on the other hand , i think crafters *should* be able to craft raid gear without having to raid, they would be required to do long quests instead to aquire recipes for individual gear parts, and have to spend time harvesting resources.

Why do you think you’re entitled to be able to get it alone when the best gear was (rightfully so) always to be obtained in a combined effort?
I repeat one more time: if crafters were able to craft the best gear nobody would run content.
And no, they shouldn’t be able to do it without raiding themselves or being in a raid guild. Because nobody who does not raid needs raid gear. And nobody should be able to obtain the best gear by simply crafting it.

Crafters should be able to craft the best gear, but it should require raid drops *AND* the recipe should be insanely long quest and/or raid dropped itself. The commission system already lets raiders work with non-raider crafters to make stuff with dropped components.

Otherwise, you have what there is today.. crafting makes consumables, power-leveling gear, and housing items.

I think crafters should be able to craft the best gear without any raid help, because a) you should raid for the fun and the challenge, not for the loot, and b) the best sword and armor smiths in the real world aren’t required to participate in mass-scale battles either in order to be masters of their craft.

I saw Nyna got the point already: Let the weapon-smiths make replacement parts that are required for (raiding) gear (repairing, polishing, whatever) or let THEM mod the gear (reforge) instead of a reforge-npc. Thus creating a dependency and making weapon-smiths less obsolete. Abstracting a bit more: interweave the disciplines of crafting/adventuring and create interdependencies. I can imagine SOE developers having good intention and great ideas, but there is probably someone higher in the hierarchy who thinks it would be better to save the ideas for a certain new and to be announced product. I believe crafting has huge potential if done right. There are only a few levels of difficulty in crafting compared to combat, making it rather mandatory than interesting to perform. Gonna wait for what eqnext will bring hoping it will fulfill at least some basic expectations I have that are missing in eq2.

Well lets turn this around. You should craft for the fun and the challenge. If people only grouped/raided for fun and challenge and not to gear up this game would be done pretty fast. Why should someone bother to kill the same mobs over and over? If you don’t like that the best gear in a game about fighting comes from fights you should play something else.
Also this is a computer game and no middle age simulator. People aren’t commanded to fight for their king. They didn’t fight for the fun and the challenge back then either. They were forced to fight or fought for loot *gasp*.

    Also:
Why do you think it’s valid for crafting to be independent from adventuring but adventurers should rely on crafters?

I think like Nina i dont like the new craft system, AND i realy dislike how experiment work, and i feel absurd everything about it.

If they want a nice craft thing, the good old racial armor from EQ1 was top, i spend with friend month to farm mat for craft the armor, very rare drop from low level mobs (dark elf comed from shadowed man), combined with rare drop from… was very borring, very farming, but i earned every piece i crafted. And the quality was top. Opposite to wait than a dozen of other player do the job for me. There is no merit to raid, just be lucky take and sit and wait the drop, most of time you cant be wrong and even of you do someone will do the job for you

Make craft for raider is an absurdity, the craft is designed for people who dont raid usualy … PVE OR Craft… not PVE then craft ,)

anyway it dont mater. Last time they have done something right it was kunark …good old time to see 6 players run after minning in jarsath arround the pool or skelly 😉

Craft required raid drop is an total absurdity than only raider can ask. And not the regular one, the one who exploit other since most of raider wont see the result.

First off: I don’t raid. I still think the best gear should come from the hardest content. That’s raid content.

What I could make of your stream of conscience gibberish, you like farming boring stuff but think raiding is to easy because you let yourself be dragged by others. You agree with Nyna but want to keep crafting and raiding separate.
Why should crafters then craft gear for adventurers in the first place? Why shouldn’t raiders craft? Most raiders I know do.

None of you had good arguments why crafters should be able to provide the best gear. I even agree that crafters should be able to provide valuable things. Nynas idea with sharpening is a good one. But whining that you don’t want to raid is stupid. I don’t complain that I have to craft. I hate crafting. I let others do it for me and pay them or do them a Cavour when they’re friends. Now why exactly can’t you do that with adventuring stuff?

-well, you shouldn’t kill the same mob over and over.
There are probably close to 500 raids in the game, like in LOTRO they should simply make all the instances scalable to level, as well as the loot (or tokens that drop).

I bet 95% of instances and dungeons in the game are abandoned, and only rarely visited by people who mentor down to solo a raid-zone, because of the bad game design.

They didn’t fight for the fun and the challenge back then either. They were forced to fight or fought for loot

    – they fought for LOOT, not for gear.

If you don’t like that the best gear in a game about fighting comes from fights you should play something else.

-actually I get my gear from raiding, and from Battlegrounds. My Armorer/Weaponsmiths are around lv30, cause it’s pointless to level them up.

I still have the impression you’re playing the wrong game from what you are saying.

To complain that dungeons don’t scale when the scaling dungeons that are there are ridiculously easy due to gear progression is pointless. The game has changed so much over time that a proper scaling may be possible but would be a complete waste of dev time. Most people have done that content a lot of times. They hardly want to go back and if they want they can because there is chronoing any mentoring which basically is scaling the player to the dungeon. I would like I see a progression server but I don’t think this will happen.
To complain about gear drops from adventuring instead of having them crafted in a game that is in large parts dedicated to getting gear is also pointless.

You might like what is coming in EQ Next.

Fact is more people like raiding/group for their gear then crafting for their gear. For that simple fact you’ll never get your way. Why you think you should hold the majority of players hostage waiting on you to craft their gear is beyond me. Plus, what makes you think that raiders wouldn’t have their own crafter to make their own gear? You would still be out of the loop QQ about who knows what then.

I have crafters and raiders but I don’t think that I should be able to craft top end raid gear. I do think that as an armorer, weaponsmith we should have the ability to repair broken armor or even reforge it (if learning that ability came through a long quest line like the Prayer Shawl).

@Nyna you contradict yourself “-well, you shouldn’t kill the same mob over and over.
There are probably close to 500 raids in the game,” but then you go on to say “-actually I get my gear from raiding,” So you’re telling us that you only run the same raid content once or twice… maybe a few times more and then don’t do it any longer… I call BS on that.
And what is crafting if it’s not doing the same content over and over and over and over again?

If the game is that bad go play LOTRO or WoW or AD&D Online, I’m sure they’d welcome you right up until the time you began telling them why you should be “entitled” to the most powerful items WITHOUT doing the most powerful content.

Pushes the soap box to the side.
Thanx to those that read this whole thing and I apologize for sounding condescending but damn quit whining if you don’t like the game leave.

@ABATHA LOL,go play what? LoTRO, WoW and probably AD&D have the same in built bias, raiders over crafters every time. Also why is raid gear the most powerful? Please do not prattle about difficulty, 20 out of 24 players in a raid can be replaced by bots with no loss in performance (in many cases with a gain in performance). It is the raid leader, the tanks and one or two others that make or break a raid team (usually healers). The rest get their gear by following directions and attending.
Raid gear should be the best for raiding, with or without a crafting component. But the best gear for open world and dungeon runs should be obtainable from dungeon runs, open world and crafting.

@Landin “Fact is more people like raiding/group for their gear then crafting for their gear” well actually no.

. many people raid to get the best gear because they want the best gear not because they like raiding.
. many people buy the best gear from raiders (SLR anyone?) because they want the best gear but do not want the time commitment and discipline of raiding (to much like a job etc).

Getting a crafter to make you the best gear has to be an equally valid method of obtaining the gear as buying it from raiders. Particularly when people fund their purchases by selling Kronos.

@Milliebii Nyna brought up those games, I just said if they’re that great go play them. Did I once prattle? Why is raid gear the most powerful? Tell ya what get yourself and 3 others with your 20 bots and go run PoW tell me how that works out for ya.

If you’ve kept up they’re (SoE) is slowly moving back to strategies during raids and away from the mass dps to burn down the mob.

As I said also, I have crafters, I’d love to be able to craft excellent gear but I don’t feel that just because I’m a crafter I should have unrestricted access to the materials to make that gear.

And my last point you said “Raid gear should be the best for raiding, with or without a crafting component. But the best gear for open world and dungeon runs should be obtainable from dungeon runs, open world and crafting.” The best gear for open world and dungeon runs just happens to be gear that you get raiding…. but you don’t need raid gear to do open world and dungeons…. also there are the rare Etheral drops that came from the advanced solo zones. SO you don’t HAVE to raid you just have to have a ton of luck on the RNG to get that gear.

Idk what game you think YOU are playing, but I have never seen EQ say it was primarily about fighting. If so, I would imagine that it would focus on fighting instead of having a very detailed and fun crafting system or housing system. I play MMOs to quest and craft with friends. Why should I be forced to raid pointless, repetitive dungeons over and over again? You’re talking about a game with not set rules on gear so what makes you think the best gear has to come from raiding? And what makes your opinion so high and mighty? I personality think the best gear should come from extremely rare world bosses that are extremely hard to find and kill. Now my opinion differs from yours, so I should just say you are spewing jibberish and your ideas are stupid right? NO. But I do think there should be a top tier of great gear that can be gotten multiple ways. Long and difficult crafting recipes, raiding, pvp, etc.
