Jethal Silverwing Hangs it Up After Five Years

Written by Feldon on . Posted in Commentary

Today brought the stunning news that the Jethal Silverwing show which has hosted numerous guests from within Sony Online Entertainment including no less than SOE President John Smedley himself, has come to an end. It is hard to imagine the EQ2 Community without his show, his parodies, and his videos.  It is also hard to ignore a trend — With this news, Dellmon and AlisciousEQ2Talk becomes the sole EQ2-specific Podcast.

Here’s the announcement from Kithicor.org:

They say that “All good things must come to an end”. And, so it is with The Jethal Show.

It’s been quite a ride. Five years of madness. We’ve had ups and downs. You, my listeners, have been there for triumph and tragety.. and now, it’s time to bow out.

I want to thank Online Gaming Radio for giving me a voice. Sony Online Entertainment for their support.. and everyone on every EQ2 server for putting up with my antics and giving me an outlet every tuesday.

Jethal may return some time in the near future perhaps live, perhaps pre recorded but you can be sure that my parodies will go on.. So keep checking in at kithicor.org, twitter & Facebook!

Thank you all.

Keep your arrows in the air, and your feet on the ground.

A real shame to see it end, but its got to be something that’s fun to do and not a 2nd job.

It would be cool to see some special podcasts fired up now and then, but definitely will check into their website now and then to see what goes on 🙂

Faith in EQ2 is diminishing. I think the people wo put the time and effort into these podcasts are getting burnt out. I can say from first hand that I know what it is like. I was a part of EQ2’sDay for over 2 years before we shut the show down this spring. Zanadi was doing it for over 5, and the show itself started nearly 8 years ago.

I give mad props to anyone who puts in the time and effort to do such a show.
(on a side note, how come EQ2’sDay didn’t get a fancy article like this when it closed? 🙁 )

I’m sorry we didn’t do an article about the end of EQ2’s-Day. Please believe me when I say it is nothing personal.

I remember your show that coincided with the Age of Discovery NDA. Your anger at SOE was so raw and personal, I was surprised that you stuck it out for so many months after that. It’s really tough to do a show about a game when you are seething with anger at its publisher and expressing such in other venues. As an outside observer, it wasn’t a matter of “if” but “when” you’d move on from covering EQ2. I myself took off most of Sentinel’s Fate just to recharge my batteries. I am glad that you were able to jump into another show rather than just hanging up podcasts forever. And hey, Jethal did leave the door open to do other parody videos and songs in the future.

OMG! I’ve followed Jethal since ‘I think I’m a gnome now’ hit the net. Oh, chuckle, chuckle. Jethal’s musical parody talent is amazing. Better than Weird Al as far as I’m concerned.

The show will definitely be missed. As stated above it needs to be FUN not another job.

So happy Jethal has left the door open for ‘specials.’

Fair winds and following seas J and E!

I wasn’t taking it personal Feldon, it was more of a humorous jab. I actually like the format of doing an open gaming show a lot more. It is a lot less restrictive, leaving a lot mroe to talk about. It also gives us a chance to expose others to new games that they might not otherwise see or hear about.

On the same note, we still do talk about EQ2, just not as in depth or exclusively. Both Zanadi and I still do like the game. We still have many friends there and log in from time to time, just not on a daily basis as we used to. I think anyone who has played EQ2 (or any MMO really)for any length of time, knows that it becomes a part of your life. The friends you meet along the way become almost a family, and no matter what happens, you always find a way to keep in touch with your online family.

I don’t blame him for ending the show. I will truly miss it though. I gave up playing this game regularly last year after noticing several guildmates and popular players disappearing, the podcasts hosts calling it quits one after another, and the game feeling stale. The only reason I have for going on these days is to test beta content in hopes something draws me back, but so far the bait isn’t worth biting. It probably isn’t just that the game feels stale, but that SOE seems to be making little effort to keep older players enjoying it. I know I will be scrutinized for saying this but it’s my honest opinion; it all went downhill after the marketplace was installed, and began to feel like how SOE manages and runs Freerealms.

I wish them lots of luck in whatever they do. Folks really don’t realize the ammount of work it takes to do a podcast, or host a site like this. The show will be missed.

As far as noticing a population decline. All of the major raiding guilds on guk are advertising for players, including the one I am in. I don’t know if folks just got tired of running ud/sev or what. However it is noticed that there has been a population decline. I expect a pickup next week with the xpac.

Our guild on Butcherblock has noticed an influx of new and returning players. I think the game is slowly repopulating, perhaps never the numbers from the past, but still healthy for the game. With the new grouping dynamics, I expect more groups (yay) and with that, more enthusiasm. Call me too optimistic … but I hope I am right.

It could be folks are just transferring off Guk, I know we had a few infamous folks go over to AB. Hopefully after the xpac we will see an uptake in player base.

That is surprising, dince they got quite a bit of publicity when they were active on both the official forums nd in the EQ2 community. A good place to check for community stuff used to be the SOE forums, under the community boards; most of the EQ2 reporters and sites would post what they were doing, and then in the case of Jethal’s show, SOE would promote it when Smed and others were on the show.
