Rothgar Responds on New Adornment Display Criticism

Written by Feldon on . Posted in Game Updates & Maintenance

Rothgar took a moment to respond to almost universal derision of the new Adornments display scheme introduced in Game Update 60:

Thanks for your feedback on the adornment changes.

However, from some of the feedback it certainly sounds like you’re not seeing everything based on an out-of-date UI. I do understand that some of you are using Default and still have issues with the changes, but before we can have a rational discussion about it, we need to make sure people are seeing the changes how they were intended and not looking at broken UI windows.

Not seeing the adornment name in the tooltip is a valid concern that we will talk about. The main reason for going to an icon-based system was to make the examine description more visual and to reduce the overall amount of space required for adornment information now that items can receive multiple adornments of the same slots. You’ll start to see items with more adornments, especially two-handers, and the examine description was getting awfully long. You’ll see we’ve done other things to try to reduce the compexity of the examine window like converting “+10 crushing, +10 piercing, +10 slashing” to just “+10 weapon skills”.

Also, with the old system, all you could see was the adornment name. Now, with the new system, when you mouse over the adornment icon, you get the full tooltip associated with that adornment, which should be an improvement by itself because you can see all the restrictions and bonuses associated with that adornment.

If the adornment icons are confusing, we can definitely look into more changes in the area. What we are trying to do is make the icons have meaning by using a variety of shapes and colors to represent different things. We want you to be able to recognize the adornment by the icon, and we can continue to add new icons to make them more visually different.

Regarding bugs, it definitely sounds like we have problem with some temporary adornments. We will look into that issue and get it fixed asap.

Thanks again for providing your feedback!

Well what I got from that is. We love what we did, and you the user have an old outdated ui, i guess talking about those who use profit.

I have the default ui, and I can say the new adornment stuff is bad. The excuse of we did this to make it easier is so much bs. It is 10 times harder now to tell what your adornments are.

So I got were not changing it, thanks for complaining.

Ya sounds like someones baby that they dont wanna let go of even though everyone is telling them it sucks on the forums. Why push so hard for something that everyone does not like?

creative people, such as development staff tend to hold dear to there darlings. Although I like the concept, I find the execution to be less than satisfactory. They need to realize that this is not just there game, but everyone who plays it as well. Unfortunatly, this is a darling project and they will push it even if peeps do not like it. Guess we will see how bad it gets. The biggest thing I would like to see from it is some appearance changes. When I look at them, it is very hard to see if the item has an adornment on it or not.

The star icon for an empty slot is terrible. It should just be an empty black box with a 1 pixel border of the slot color. Anything else gives the impression that the slot is occupied.

And the adornment icons aren’t great. Some kind of indication of offensive vs defensive like a green plus or red plus icon would be nice.

I’m really not seeing the big problem here, I guess if the adornment name is missing that is bad, but if it reappears on mouseover that would be fine for me, as once its adorned I do not need to look at it often.

The main improvement I think this system does is graphically communicating to the player that there is a empty socket, whereas the old one did so with text.

I’ll have to play with it a bit more tonight.

Maybe it’s me, especially having come from EQ1 (back in 2004) but this system is reminiscent of the EQ1 system. I don’t mind it, really. The only “gripe” I have is, as others have mentioned, is I can’t see the names of the adornments by hovering over the adorned item and seeing the adornment’s name in the tool-tip description. I have to actually bring up the examine window of the adorned item THEN hover over the adornment slots to see the names of the adornments. A little annoying, but something I can get used to.

And I did like that I can call up the examine window of an unadorned item and use the adornment and click on the examine window instead of having to click on the item.

Maybe it IS just me, but the colors are clear and easily understood (red, white, yellow, blue) it’s easy to see if they’re filled or empty, and I can examine the adornment slot itself to get an exact description of the adornment (which I never could before, you just had to see the name (and sometimes it didn’t give an adornment name on some items) and guess by the added effect, if you knew which one WAS added). This wasn’t always easy (especially when an expansion, zone, and item was new and so were adornments) when they were put on new items with effects already. Now I can easily tell which effect or proc is from an adornment and which is part of the item itself.

With the exception of not seeing the adornment names by hovering over an adorned item, and having to call up the examine window to see the names (annoying, sure, but only because it’s not AS convenient and we’re used to the old way) I really don’t mind the new system. Did they HAVE TO change it? No. I was fine with the way it was. Is this system AWFUL? I don’t think so. And, if what I’m hearing is true, that people aren’t putting adornments on because they don’t even know you CAN put stuff on (and yes, I’m looking at many of the EQ2X players) meh, whatever. They’re both fine.

Sorry, am I reading this correctly? “…now that items can receive multiple adornments of the same slots.” This sounds like it means if I have an item that has a Yellow Adorn slot that I can put multiple Yellow Adornments on that item?

The icon change is nice now that I’m used to it. The shard looking things were a crappy choice anyways. But not seeing the names is no bueno. It would be at least useable if names of adorns were normally displayed.

But this stupid pop up window and having to click slots is just dumb now. Game did just fine adorning through the persona window before, now I need an item examine window to adorn. Just an annoyance more than anything though, and not an improvement.

Kaufman. Items that can take multiple adornments have multiple slots. Instead of 1 white and 1 yellow slot, a new piece of gear might have 1 white and 2 yellow slots.

Thanks for the explanation – I wanted to confirm that was the case vs. an item being flagged for any amount of certain color adorns, which wouldn’t make sense obviously.

Im kinda glad they’re doing this despite all the complaints. Its been a long time in EQ2 where they did a massive change and gave the players a big “F U” response. The players dont know what they want as a large mass of people, so having a focus on how they want the game to be and staying to that vision without compromising for the vocal crybabies, could be good for the game.

I hated SF, but with the free time given this past couple weeks, I may buy DoV if things get a bit better in a patch or two.

I’m having a huge problem figuring out what adornment can fit in what kinds of gear, the icons don’t seem to address that at all. (imho).

Sure a lot of the adornments are different shapes, but the slots don’t seem to reflect the same shapes so I can look at a white adornment and without examining it still have no idea what inventory slots it can go in (hands, feet, legs, etc).

Kaufman, there’s been a big debate about 2-handers, that they are not worth it over 2 weapons, or a weapon and shield or a symbol because you lose a red slot (one for each item). Maybe with this (as some have suggested) they might put 2 red slots on 2-handers to make them a viable choice as a weapon again. Here’s hoping . . .

i hate this new adorment icon too and dont think i will ever like it, I want to be able to see what it is when i mouse over. We have enough to remember which one we need without now having to try to remember a dang icon too 🙁 And now I am having issues trying to figure out if an adornment will even go into the dang slot available. I think what I dont get more than anything else is why FIX it if it wasnt BROKEN! We have so many things in the game that need fixing… and they are worried about the LOOK of an item? Instead of WHERE the raid mobs went for example… killing eq2 doing this stuff imo… new bgs are crap. u have to do the new one a zillion times for faction. And make a nice group join and half go to the opposing team! Not cool.. so many broken things. Fix them and leave appearance and UIs till all else is fixed.

No, but there are items out there that have 2 or more Yellow (or other color) slots on them. Those items can use multiple adornments of the same color.

I’m not a big fan of the system or the way SoE is handling it. My though is if you introduce a change to the ggame, and it gets this much ngative feedback, its time to put it back the way it was and rethink your changes, not shove them down the players throats.

Adornments are getting so ridiculously important it’s time for adornment solvent to remove them and apply them to another item.

Who the hell is going to trash 2 yellow adorns and a white adorn or 2 red adorns, a white, and a yellow off an item to gain .8% potency?

I completely agree Feldon. I Don’t necessarily find the Adornment changes all that problematic but they definately have become a VERY large part of your gear. I for one would love to see a method for recycling some adornments even at a small cost (say maybe 2 shards or some coin).

Adornment solvent was requested at last year’s FF. it wasn’t thrown out as an option, but I’ll bet it’s not a trivial code change, either. Perhaps you could push the issue a bit this year, Feldon? (I’m not going this time)

Maybe I’m naive or I’ve missed something in the game.but I’ve always been under the impression that replacing an adornment is on a one for one basis. So if you got lets say a new red adornment increasing your potency, you would put it in a slot and replace 1 red adornment. Any other adornments on that piece would remain unless you were going to replace them with something also.

Personally I have no problem with the new system and icons. Yes, its different and unfamiliar but I’m sure I’ll be completely used to it a month from now.

    Lincus,

You are missing that in each dungeon and raid, new items/armor drop which are minor upgrades. Let’s say 1% more potency or crit bonus, or 0.8% multiattack, or 0.5% more block chance.

If you want to use that new item, you must re-buy all your adornments for the new item. Some items now have a white adorn slot and two yellow or two red adorn slots.

In Velious, it can be a frustrating experience — and expensive proposition — to get new loot. Does that sound right to you?

I agree with Feldon, at 10 shards each rearranging red adornments gets expensive, now in related news, I’ve been using up my marks from SF and putting in those adornments for now for at least one of my characters.

I larger problem from GU 60 was the fact that you cannot upgrade adornments anymore. When you try, it says to examine and select the slot you want to upgrade. However, since you cannot see the adornment slots when examining, you cannot select the slot it goes in. It does not matter that you are updating a yellow adornment and there is only one yellow slot. It also gives the same error message if the item only has one slot. You can no longer upgrade adornments.

Update your ProfitUI, FetishUI, or whatever custom UI you have. Seriously.
