SOE Update: We’re Still Down

Written by Feldon on . Posted in Uncategorized

Some players have asked for updates every 12 hours from SOE, even if it’s just to report there has been no new progress. If this was you, well here you go with an SOE Facebook update from about 2 hours ago:

We regret that we were unable to bring services back online today, and continue to work hard on the issue!

All of their websites should have an emergency fall back template with a blog where they can post news updates and such. The press releases are pretty generic and very spaced apart.

Surely all of their games have community leads. Not to mention forums admins & moderators. I somehow doubt those people are helping with the security audit & likely reconfigure / recode of their entire network infrastructure. Then again, maybe smokejumper & the gang is busy making cat 6 cables as we speak. You never now.

What I do know is the communication is horrible. The entire player base is all but forced to traffic sites like this site, eq flames, zam, and random gaming / general news sites for up to the minute details.

If this happened to Blizzard you’d better believe they’d at least have more communication to their customer base.

To be honest Sony has done a fine job communicating with the public. Thing is. im sure they didnt see this coming and to have been hacked on this large a scale kinda sends you into panic mode. Read the letter to congress they handled the situation with care and caution.I think they are doing a good job.

I rather they not give us a date cause if they miss it .. itll whine fest on every forum! atleast they got somewhat of a timetable and they are keeping us somewhat updated .. Remember that lots of companies wouldnt report breaches like this.

I just think they have always had lack of communication skills, so tbh this is nothing new. But I agree would be much better to get a least some sort of idea as to if and when servers will be back up. Even the hopes of friday. But tbh they didnt confirm that either. I have always found it funny that soe never gives an eta time. Or if they do its been way way off. In the meantime I check daily then get some fun in real life. Its not all bad 🙂 I forgot there was a sun outside till now 🙂 !

At this point it is taking way to long. I want something besides soon from them. Give us a time table. With all the supposed people working on this issue, they could rewrite the game. :/

All I know is that this has been one of my most productive weeks in a long time.

Look on the bright side. A break from the daily grind is good. The game will be somewhat more refreshing again when we finally get back in.

A break from the grind is good but I was coming back from the break the day before this. Worst … timing … ever. Ah well that’s life besides it hasn’t even been a week of downtime and back on 56k it took that long just to dl a decent sized patch =P

Whoever posted that SONY is doing a fine job, doesn’t know what they are talking about. They failed to communicate as why they didn’t report it the same day they were infiltrated. Same as keeping its customers informed of what going on. SONY is basically FAIL at communication to anyone. All there statement to congress was a cover-up as to why they didn’t report it, when they should have reported it immediately, and protected there customers right on the day it happened.

Feldon that top statement was over 15 hours ago from SOE.

Bash: 2 hours ago at the time of my post, which was about 13 hours ago. 😉

And Sony’s communication about this has been TERRIBAD. If they think it’s not going to be up this week, then post so. People are checking back to these websites several times a day hoping they’ll come back soon, which just prolongs the whole thing. It would be better to say “It’s going to be at least a week” and if they pleasantly surprise people by coming up early, so be it.

    @Bash

I would recommend reading the letter Sony sent to congress giving answers to the 13 questions and also a lot of background on the hacks and how they were detected.

In short it did take about 2 days to detect the hack and that data had been stolen because they first had to figure out what was going on (machines started rebooting), and then they had to mirror and peice through them to find what had happened to the hardware (the thieves had been careful to cover their tracks, but as soon as they confirmed that data had been stolen the information was sent out – this is something involve 50+ programs and 70+ servers).

As for their communication, its not been great, the one problem is that they have no plan of how to handle it and are just winging it. I’d agree with Feldon that they should kick things down the road with a check back in a week sort of post if they know there is a serious amount of work to be done.

But SOE and Sony Inc’s handling from the contact to congress I have found impressive, its a shame that this sort of contact wasn’t sent out straight to their customers as it hits the mark (and some contact from Smedley and co would also be good for morale).

Agreed, its going to be very interesting to see what EQ2 feels like again after a longish break like this for everyone, it certainly will help cure burnout for anyone suffering from it 😀

    Hi all,

very sad player here why are people such total ……… well cant say on here but would like to. I do not understand why anyone does this sort of thing they must lead such selfish self important introverted lifestyles that frankly why bother living at all. From the people that play these games to get away from your types in real life why dont you sod off and put your skill to a use that benifits human society rather than destroys it. After all whenther you like it or not you are human.

To Sony I hope that all gets sorted and this may be a lesson in being a bit slack about your severs security and firewalls etc. You make enough money to warrant making this happen so why did you choose to be lazy or greedy spendthrifts and not do the right thing by all of us and as it turns out yourselfs. Talk about cutting of your noses as the pun goes silly Sony.

I hope that EQ is back up and running asap and here is tip please start advertising the game on TV and in game stores honestly there a lot of player you are missing who would love the game but sinply have no idea it exists I was one of them came across it by accident in a rummage in a pc store lucky Sony got another paying customr but misses out on a whole world of others. Hmm spendthrifts who do not want to pay for advertising? or lazy or both again silly Sony. WEll here’s one for you Sony got free advertising, sadly for the wrong kind of reason. Still love the game so I will be back to see all my friends in the land of Norrath.

    Bye for now Gia

My biggest worry about this is, what if I decide to go to another paid game? Will I have to still watch SOE to cancel my subscription? Why should I have to keep checking in with a company that I want to cancel services with?

Hi EE well as far as cancelling goes I have had no problem with them doing that when I am hols my subscription gets stopped by me and not started again until I choose to update it. Just make sure when you 1st log back in to change the old password and see how we go thats all we can do. We have to hope that when it does finally work again that sony will have got with it and brought their security etc out of the dark ages into the HELLOO there are HACKERS everywhere world,Fancy not even havi9ng a firewall eeeek. If they dod we should be just fine we hope.
Oh and Sony how come you have put a contact number for every other country but not us Australians?? Hello big country here why do we get so shamefully treated mmm. Not happy from Aus.
See ya all soon me hope Gia

Sony has serious communication problems, but that’s nothing new. The problem here isn’t so much that Sony had piss-poor security but that they were targetted by criminal hackers (though I fail to see how any hackers be they criminal or hacktivist are really different at all). This wasn’t an attempt to screw a company or stop a game site. This was a criminal attempt to secure the information necessary to steal players credit identities for financial gain either by the hackers themselves or through the sale of that information to other criminals. You can blame Sony for a security failure all you want, but in the end, hackers can always eventually find a way past the security measures, it’s just a matter of when.
I think Sony is handling this whole matter rather poorly and taking down every service they have with only limited explanations of how this is necessary won’t really satisfy the consumers. It’s just costing Sony money, credibility and players as more and more people find other games to play while they wait for an undefined time period.
