Costume Contest, Proposal, and Wrap

Written by Feldon on . Posted in Daybreak Live (SOE Live/Fan Faire)

If you have followed past Fan Faires particularly the costume contests, the big news tonight was Snickers, the froglok paladin, proposing to his long time on-again off-again girlfriend first outside EQ and then, by chance, meeting again in-game.

She said yes. 🙂

I took over 500 photos of the costume contest. The clear winner was someone dressed up as Billy!! Did I mention I am really loving my new Canon 550D / T2i? I am getting better pictures without a flash than I used to WITH a flash. I hate how flash photos look (without a large diffuser), so I made a good choice here. 😉

There is lots still to post. More photos, those videos, and commentary in the aftermath of Fan Faire 2010. I talked to more devs, and more players to try to have a perspective on the whole game, not just parts of the game.

I and my friend Marlee (who wore it) made the Billy costume that everybody is talking about.
You said you have photos, I couldn’t go with Marlee so I didn’t get to see the contest, can you please tell my were you have them uploaded to, so I can see how it looked under their lighting?
    Thanks

sorry feldon, dont mean this to be offensive or w/e.but if call what you’ve posted on here good shots, I’d hate to see others you take. 90% of them are blurry–due to low lighting and/or low iso and shutter speed. I’m a photographer and i know a bit about the subject 🙂
you apparently shot hand held, not tri/bi-pod way. were these automatic mode or ap, or tv? i doubt it was auto cuz the built in flash would of popped up. to late now, but if other than auto mode, you didn’t set correct exposure to compensate for the low lighting and moving subjects, you should of had an indicator in your view finder that may or should of been flashing warning you of low lighting/exposure.

    Robert,

I’m sorry you didn’t like the photos. Some key points:

    • I’m not a professional photographer (obvious)
    • I don’t have $5k of kit, including a flash that would reach 25 feet.
    • Improper use of flash makes everyone look like a bottle of white out. Until I’ve got the right gear and know how to use it, I’ve avoided flash.
    • I’m still learning aperture vs. shutter speed vs. ISO.
    • I did shoot hand held as I was sitting on the floor
    • Others were there taking HD video and, no doubt, professional photos of the event, however it could be days/weeks before they post, or they may be kept internally for publicity. *Some* pro photographers are less likely to share high res photos. If I put in the time and dedication and money, I might also want to hold back on posting such large watermark-free large images.
    • This is all very fast pace and there’s no time for slow shutter or changing settings from shot-to-shot.
    • I generally ignore the warning lights on electronics 🙂

Thanks for your feedback. I’ve ordered the Digital Field Guide for the 550D/T2i so I can smarten myself up a bit.

when indoors, turn up your iso to 1000 and put shutter at 125 give or take. if you have an external flash, point it up to the ceiling so that the light can
bounce off of ceiling providing a natural look rather than point flash right at subject.
