Press Embargo Drops Five Hours Prior to EQ2 Expansion Keynote

EQ2-AltarofMaliceFinal_wLGLOGO

Looks like Press gets a healthy headstart on posting expansion news for EverQuest and EverQuest II this year. After their private meetings with Dave “SmokeJumper” Georgeson and EQ2 Producer Holly “Windstalker” Longdale on Tuesday, they’ve had time to draft their articles and now, they’re available for all to read. My issue is, people at home have more information than those at SOE Live who may not yet have read these articles. Some Press sites (notably excluding Massively and ZAM) get a full boat ride from SOE, paying for hotel and sometimes even airfare, dinners, etc.). EQ2Wire covers EverQuest II all 365 days a year, and we do it without VIP treatment.

Anyway, enough politics. On to the news! These are the sites we’ve found so far:

The totally kickass key art is at the top of the article. And now the bullet points:

  • Level 100 increase for Adventure, Tradeskill, and Guild levels.
  • 14 Dungeons
  • 6 Raids
  • 6 Advanced Solo Zones
  • 2 Contested Dungeons
  • 2 Massive Overland zones created with the new unbelievable Layout Editor. I’ve heard that the new zones are so stunning that players will hardly believe they are running in the EQ2 engine.
    • Tranquil Sea: composed of the devastated Isle of Refuge, Deathweave Isle, and the Pygmie-and-dinosaur-inhabited Island of Dichen
    • Phantom Sea: composed of the haunted forest of Kithicor, the trading company’s home base Highhold, and Grimshales, an island made from a shard of Luclin
  • 4 new Avatars

More after the jump…

From the EQ2 Forums:

WEEKLY FEATURE
The Nexus Core [Challenge Duo]

  • Having faced near-destruction at the hands of careless adventurers, The Nexus Core has assembled the ultimate automaton to defend its delicate systems. Great rewards await those strong and cunning enough to defeat him. Certain death awaits all others. Can you outwit the mechanical mind of Mechanoct?

This encounter is balanced for two extremely well-geared players containing at least one tank or one healer.

QUESTS
Age’s End Questline

  • Doomscale crystalweavers will no longer spin when attacked while healing their designated crystal.
  • The crystals will no longer reset to full health if no one is attacking them within their rooms.
  • Returning to Jorlak after destroying the 3 crystals should properly update the entire raid.
  • Corrected another issue that could cause some members to not get updates for the quests at certain stages due to lag.

Ages End x2 Quest Goers With Old Zone Must Reset

Written by Feldon on . Posted in EQ2, Game Updates & Maintenance, Raiding

The Age’s End x2 raid zone, added this Tuesday, is intended to wrap up the long-running Age’s End storyline which dates back to the very first content in the game. However it seems that Kerafyrm will not go down quite so easily! Several threads have been posted by players reporting issues with continuing the quest from before this morning’s update:

Players have expressed concern that their Worldwide and Server Discoveries of the quest rewards have been impacted by the quest bugging out for them (but not others). So as to organize and consolidate the bug reports and efforts by the EQ2 team to fix this quest, a new thread has been created for this purpose where Gninja has posted some suggestions on how to get the quest back on the right track (or start over):

Update Notes: Thursday, August 7, 2014

From EQ2 Buildmaster Bunji on the EQ2 Forums comes our possibly last update until after SOE Live:

QUESTS
Age’s End Questline

  • The zone should no longer revert players if anyone lags during an update.
  • Hailing Jorlak will no longer revert quest stages unless it is a new zone.
  • Firiona Vie should now update the entire raid when giving her staff back.
  • Roehn Theer should now update the entire raid when giving his swords back.
  • Players hailing any of the quest NPCs should no longer cause the scripts to trigger more than once.

POPULATION / ZONE PROGRESSION
Temple of Veeshan: Dreadscale’s Maw

  • Zlandicar will now drop 2 weapon patterns when defeated.

Fix for Age’s End x2 Quest Coming Tomorrow

Written by Feldon on . Posted in EQ2, Game Updates & Maintenance, Raiding

As reported in a number of places on the EQ2 Forums, the Age’s End x2 quest added yesterday has some glitches which are allowing the quest to reset or “roll back” to an earlier state.

EQ2 Designer Carlos “Gninja” Mora took to Twitter with a quick update:

which he elaborated on here:

The issues are being caused by the zone trying to keep everyone updated together and checking if anyone fell behind or got ahead of the zone. This was us trying to make it more painless to do a quest while raiding but in fact just made it more complicated and more points of failure for lag to affect such things. We will be reviewing it today and get all the kinks worked out and simplifying the entire process. The known issues I have are as follows:

    • Multiple players hailing at the same time can create lag spikes where some or all players get reverted a stage.
  • When returning to Jorlak after defeating the 3 crystals hailing him can reset the quests. DO NOT hail him when you return to center till we get a fix in for this. Returning to the center should progress your quest without hailing him. The update takes a few seconds because of him activating his script.
  • Multiple players trying to pick up the Lifeguide staff at same time can create lag spikes that revert some or all players back a few stages.
  • After defeating General Velryyn the quest sometimes only updates the group of the person hailing Firiona Vie. For now have one person in each group coordinate their hails for Firiona Vie and Theer.

We will be addressing all of the above issues asap. If you see anything outside the listed above please let me know here or via PM the more details the better!

For those who are getting stuck, he had this advice which, while isn’t perfect, means that the zone can be attempted in another hour if the quest bugs out:

The zone is repeatable every hour and you can get the quests every 18 hours. So you will likely just need to run it again.

and finally..

Vigilant House Items (Food, etc.) on Loyalty Vendor July 29th, Age’s End x2 Aug 5th

Looks like Age’s End x2 raid, currently on Test and Beta, is being pushed back a bit. From Holly “Windstalker” Longdale‘s twitter:

Age’s End: The Final Chapter — Why an X2 Raid?

Written by Feldon on . Posted in EQ2, Game Updates & Maintenance, Itemization, Raiding

kerafyrm

When nobody is happy, that means you’ve reached a successful compromise, right?

Some players are upset at the announcement that the Age’s End prophecy, which has dominated EverQuest II’s storyline for almost a decade, will not be directly experienced by solo players. Others are incredulous that it will not be a difficult 24-person raid. EQ2 Lead Designer Kyle “Kander” Vallee took to the forums to give the thinking behind why Age’s End: The Final Chapter is a x2 (12 person) raid and to encourage players to playtest the content:

So a few things.

We opted to make this an x2 because we want to give a lot broader amount of people access to it. It is the Ages End prophecy and the end of the most important story line in EverQuest II to date. Limiting this to x4 raiders seemed unfair. Sure, we could have made it a 6 man, but that seemed less epic for the content.

So we made a relatively easy x2 and a challenge x2. The challenge x2 is not really stupendously harder, or at least that isn’t the intention, but it will lend some better rewards to those who have done the work and geared up to this level of damage.

The bottom line was we wanted to give as many people access to it at that level without making it seem silly. We do not feel that an x2 format is silly. We feel our x2 content is lacking and we wish we could do substantially more.

This event is on Beta now and I encourage everyone to go check it out.

Kander

How can solo and group players experience the closure of the Age’s End story? I would imagine there will be live streams and perhaps pick-up raids giving it a go. Also, with the level cap raise to 100 this November, it seems likely that the x2 zone will be doable by a single well-geared group, or 12 players in average gear. You may not get the story right away, but there are always other ways.

From Kyle “Kander” Vallee on the EQ2 Forums:

So everyone knows, we are adding a good amount of new items to Dreadscale’s Maw. These will be similar in quality to the items we put in Deathtoll. Practiced and Uplifting effects, etc.

We are shooting to have this stuff in as soon as possible, we’ve been working on it for a couple weeks.

No solid ETA yet. Soon.

Happy 4th!

What Do You Think of Fabled Deathtoll?

Written by Feldon on . Posted in Commentary, EQ2, Game Updates & Maintenance, Itemization, Raiding

It’s been just over a week since Fabled Deathtoll, a level 95 x4 raid zone opened in Norrath. While the zone and enemies may be familiar territory for Kingdom of Sky veterans, the boss battle strategies have gained a few twists. But perhaps most surprising about this revisited zone is the way loot is awarded. The EQ2 team seem to tried out several new approaches, and so far, the response has been mixed.

Instead of the typical drops off each named, certain names drop one-use recipe books that create powerful items. Other enemies drop new cyan-colored adornments. I won’t try to parse the entire structure of how loot works in the zone, but the official Fabled Deathtoll thread met an untimely end as the tenor of the feedback did not amuse the EQ2 moderation team.

The thread got a number of responses from the EQ2 design team. Indeed, just before the thread was closed, it earned this response from Kander pointing the way towards a number of corrective changes, some of which have already been patched into the game:

WEEKLY FEATURE

  • The first round of Battlegrounds matchmaker fixes is live!
  • Teams will now be more fair numbers wise. No more 24 reds against 3 blues!
  • NOTE: teams could be a little off if not everyone picked to be on your team accepts the match. However, backfills will go to the lowest team first so as more people queue to fill in the backfills it will work to even up the teams.
  • The getting dropped into Champion’s Respite instead of going straight to your match from your home server is still not fixed.
  • If you are chronomentoring on your home server when you accept a battlegrounds match, you will have your chronomentor session restored to you when you return at no cost.
  • When you enter a battlegrounds match you will get put into your team’s respawn instead of being dropped in the middle of the map.
  • Backfilled players will be put on the team with the fewest total number of players.
  • Players who queue as a group will all be placed on the same team. However, the order in the group/raid window will not be maintained.

Emergency Fix for May 14th, 2014

Written by Feldon on . Posted in EQ2, Game Updates & Maintenance, Raiding

For the third time in two days, the EQ2 servers are going down, this time for an emergency fix of some sort. It’s been called a hotfix, but we all know that a hotfix means no interruption of service. This is a cold fix.

Here are the update notes for this afternoon (4pm PDT) fix which include an exploit fix:

POPULATION / ZONE PROGRESSION
Temple of Veeshan: Dreadscale’s Maw

  • Prismatic Touch should now trigger off heals as well if not protected by a fully leveled Tear of Veeshan green adornment.
  • Prismatic Touch now properly persists through deaths.
  • Cer’matal the Gatekeeper should no longer apply multiple stacks of “Infused Power”.
  • Jailbreak should now show in the personal detrimental window.
  • Jailbreak should be properly removed once the jail has been broken.
