New Exceptional Jewel Adornments Trip Up Mix-and-Matchers

Written by Feldon on . Posted in Game Updates & Maintenance, Itemization, Raiding

One of the more interesting features teased at the Altar of Malice systems panel at SOE Live 2014 last summer was the concept of Adornment Set Bonuses. As described, players who applied adornments from the same set would receive a lucrative bonus effect or set of stats. However when the Altar of Malice expansion arrived, the set bonuses were found to be relatively limited and even nonsensical, leading most players to ignore them and freely mix-and-match adornments to min/max their characters. Players guessed that an interesting idea on paper hadn’t turned out to be compelling enough to require another layer of decision-making to players.

Now six months after the release of the expansion, the Rum Cellar DLC has introduced new adornments that have brought this discussion back to the forefront. So far, the feedback from this introduction has been mixed as players must now consider some new choices. For starters, these new Exceptional Jewel adornments consume a slot traditionally reserved for the powerful War Runes — the Cloak slot. Further, only certain adornment sets include the popular Shoulder choices of 6% Flurry and 6% Doublecast. Players must now decide whether they’ll give up one of their five War Rune adornments AND a certain amount of freedom of choice in exchange for these bonuses.

The dev team have been taking feedback about these new adorns and there have already been some changes to them since they launched as far as how they display in-game, and being dropped as player-selectable patterns. This is being discussed in a few places on the EQ2 Forums:

Kander’s Candor: Rum Cellar and Beyond

Written by Feldon on . Posted in EQ2, Game Updates & Maintenance, Itemization, Raiding

EQ2 Lead Designer Kyle “Kander” Vallee has posted more details on the upcoming Rum Cellar DLC, as well as a peek at the large fall update which the EQ2 team has been careful not to describe as an expansion, yet will have an overland zone, quest lines, and numerous dungeons.

I’m relieved to read some of the details and this paints a better picture overall of what we can expect this year. If I had to ask for “one thing more” in the statement, I’d have liked to see the Echoes of Faydwer Fabled dungeons mentioned by name. They’re a nice summer holdover for players who can run the Altar of Malice instances in their sleep, and it helps us stretch out the content until the fall update. The announcement doesn’t touch on pricing, but I think it nudges in the right direction that we’re not going to be nickel-and-dimed for single dungeon updates. Players just want to know that the overall cost and rate of content release isn’t going to unexpectedly jump. Without that assurance, it’s understandable that some players are hesitating about the Rum Cellar DLC.

For many of them, it’s not the pricing of Rum Cellar so much as the total pricing for all the content coming in 2015 that players are curious about. If the overall number excluding extras such as prestige houses, mounts, and mercs is reasonable, then I think people will get on board. I plan to buy Rum Cellar on my main account, and will evaluate the Octoberish update when it’s around the corner. So without further ado, let’s read up!

Greetings Fellow Norrathians!

I was asked by Windstalker and a few other prominent Norrath citizens to come and expand on the information about the Rum Cellar Campaign as well as give some hints about what we have in store for the future.

Producer’s Letter: Class Changes on Beta

Written by Feldon on . Posted in EQ2, Game Updates & Maintenance, Itemization

From EverQuest and EverQuest II Executive Producer Holly “Windstalker” Longdale on the EQ2 Forums:

Good day, Norrath!

This week, we are starting to beta test class changes for scouts, fighters, and summoners. We have wanted to tackle some high priority issues for these classes for a long time and we’ve been working on solutions. This includes improvements like increasing DPS for scouts and fighters, which goes along with a gear revamp for fighters’ defensive armor that makes playing the game more rewarding (i.e. using abilities will matter more). For summoners, we’ve addressed some lingering issues with pets and implemented a whole new pet AI, as well as the long-awaited summoner pet window that will display pet stats. We’ve invited some of our community experts and players to help us test on Beta for release as soon as we are all satisfied which will hopefully be in a larger update at the end of the month (more news on that really soon).

We are also focusing on and continuing to bring improvements to performance. We are aware of the lag concerns and are working hard to address them as quickly as we find them. We found some issues we patched out last week and we’re seeing improvements. Please continue to use /bug and /feedback if you are experiencing severe lag and aren’t using a third-party UI mod (which do tend to bog down clients).

Last, but not least, we wish you the best of the silliest of high holidays with Bristlebane Day events. We will continue to bring you infamous holiday fun throughout the year and, as always, will continue to provide frequent updates and bug fixes.

Spring has sprung and we’re excited to be on this journey with you all! We appreciate you all and the support you’ve shown us.

More news to come!

The Summoner Pet AI/UI has been on test since February. No test/beta notes have been posted for the remainder of the mentioned changes just yet.

New Primordial Adornments, Amalgamations, and You

Written by Feldon on . Posted in EQ2, Game Updates & Maintenance, Itemization

adornments

An addition to the StationCash Marketplace today has the Pay-to-Win spidey senses tingling, so rather than having a knee-jerk reaction, let’s break things down and see just where these new Primordial Adornments fall, talk about how desirable they are, and look at just how costly it is to acquire them through gameplay vs. the marketplace.

With today’s update, new Primordial Adornments have been added at every tier, with their power scaling to the player’s level. They aren’t like Green adornments (ie Spirit or Soulstones) which gain experience from adventuring. What’s unique about these adornments is not that they exist, but they are NO TRADE and require a very special rare component called a ‘primordial fragment’.   The level 95 one is the [eq2u]effulgent primordial fragment[/eq2u].

Qualified adorners can make 10 new adornments:

and from the EQ2 Forums, in addition to the usual types of fixes, it looks like a new type of scaling White Adornment is coming out which will be crafted with materials from super-rare nodes or a satchel purchased from the Marketplace. We’re not going to jump to any conclusions until we see the mechanic of how this all works. Not surprisingly, Dethdlr, who just spent weeks redoing his Adornment Calculator, is now having a conniption fit.

Further clarification from Kander:

Mission givers are back up. We will be running a double Ferrin weekend this weekend for all.

Sorry guys, the back end stuff we have been doing for the DB changes coming, messed with the OS time and caused a few problems. We are glad we caught it quickly too.

Update Notes: Thursday, February 26, 2015 — UPDATE: Includes NPC Fix!

Written by Feldon on . Posted in Game Updates & Maintenance, Grouping, Itemization

We’re still dead in the water as far as Altar of Malice daily and weekly missions for Overland, Solo, Adv Solo, Heroic, Event Heroic, and Raid content, however there are some other updates happening tomorrow which will be great when we get our NPCs back.

Update from Gninja last night:

This update does include the fix to the missions but they will not immediately be turned on after the servers come back up. The mission givers should return shortly after all the servers are back up and we have double checked them on live servers.

From the EQ2 Forums:

  • Elder Senistus’ “Persecute” spell has had its damage lowered.

Ossuary of Malevolence [Contested]

  • Ostiophobe will no longer cast Toxic Ruin constantly. Toxic Ruin may now be interrupted.

Altar of Malice Mission Givers Fix in the Works

Written by Feldon on . Posted in EQ2, Game Updates & Maintenance, Grouping, Itemization, Raiding

pandabear1

We are anxiously awaiting a fix and a return of the Altar of Malice mission givers. Until that time, it is not possible to pickup Solo, Adv Solo, Heroic, Event Heroic, Contested, or Raid missions on either a Daily or Weekly basis, not to mention timed overland Solo Missions. A fix seems unlikely today, but we’ll keep hanging on until the solution is found and applied.

Here’s Gninja with a couple of updates to say the team are working on it:

It is getting fixed and it is getting fixed right. We would rather get it right the first time and take an extra day to put in the needed testing than to rush it out and potentially make things worse. Sorry for the inconvenience.

and:

It is a new bug and we are getting it fixed asap. It is top priority. We know it sucks that they are missing and we want them to not be missing as well! We will get it resolved as quickly as we can with putting in the testing time to make sure its fixed right so we don’t have to bring them right back down.

Update from Windstalker on Twitter:

Still looking at some funk with the missions givers for #eq2. We’re planning a Double Ferrin weekend assuming we fix it (and we should).

All Daily and Weekly Mission Givers for Tradeskill, Solo, Adv Solo, Heroic, Event Heroic, and Raid Currently MIA

Out of an abundance of caution, all Altar of Malice mission quest givers have been despawned on all EQ2 servers. This started earlier this evening with Skrit, the Tradeskill daily mission giver but is now affecting all mission givers of all gameplay styles.

Update: The in-game MOTD has been updated with this message:

A bug has caused an issue with mission givers in Altar of Malice. All mission givers have been removed from the game. We will have them back as soon as possible.

Login Maintenance Continues; Don’t Get Too Excited About Double White Adorn Slots on New Heroic Gear

Written by Feldon on . Posted in EQ2, Game Updates & Maintenance, Itemization

First up, this morning’s login server maintenance just passed hour four of its scheduled three hour window. The latest tweet indicates that there is no new ETA predicted…

Also, those fancy new weapons we got with today’s update seem to have a few surprises. First, at least two of the spell autoattack Wand items lost their green stats somewhere along the way. Second, the new weapons have two white adornment slots which is not in line with current itemization plans. Kander has responded:

Its a bug, they should not have two slots. The second slot sneaked back on there. We will fix it and the wands ASAP.

“Adornment Reclamation” Becomes Heirloom — Buy For Your Alts

Written by Feldon on . Posted in EQ2, Game Updates & Maintenance, Itemization

adornment_reclamation

If you’ve done the Shattered Seas signature quest line on a character or two and just don’t see yourself repeating it again, but yet you really want the ability to pop off adornments on your alt characters with the [eq2u]Adornment Reclamation[/eq2u] spell, you’re in luck.

Three months after the launch of the Altar of Malice expansion, it’s now possible for a character who has completed the Shattered Seas signature questline (you must have earned the related achievement) to buy an HEIRLOOM version of this spell for their alts from the Ferrin Merchant in the tower near the Phantom Seas docks. If you still want the [eq2u]Indomitable Pteranodon[/eq2u], [eq2u]Anchor of Wanderer’s Dock[/eq2u], and the ability to travel to the Phantom Sea from any world bell, you’ll still want to do the Signature line. Plus, all but the best -geared ToV characters can benefit from the increased mitigation and resists on the Signature line gear. And if the stats are unappealing, you can buy gear with different stats as you complete each quest.

Notes from Today’s EverQuest II Twitch Livestream for Feb 18, 2015

Written by Feldon on . Posted in EQ2, Game Updates & Maintenance, Grouping, Itemization, Raiding

eq2_twitch_2015-02-18

Members of the EverQuest II team took to Twitch today to reassure players about the direction and future of the game given last week’s stunning takeover and layoffs. While it was great to hear some of the team’s overall plans for the near future, it would have been great to start out with an acknowledgement of what happened, some high level broad strokes about how the team has pulled together to continue to give us content. I’d have also mentioned the expansion (Even if a date is unknown) as there is a doubt as to whether there will be one. For a monthly “here’s what we’re working on” this was perfectly fine, but with expectations as high as they were, we really needed a Home Run and this was more of a base hit.

The livestream included EQ/EQ2 Executive Producer Holly “Windstalker” Longdale, Lead Designer Kyle “Kander” Vallee, EQ2 Designer Chris “Chrol” Garlick, EQ2 Senior Designer Nathan “Kaitheel” McCall, and EQ2 Animator Tom Tobey.

First up, Holly talked about how the EnterpriseDB migration is still under way. This is a lot of back end work to upgrade EQ2’s game servers which will have huge benefits once it’s complete, including Cross-Server Dungeons. The servers have been getting updates this week (thus the 4 hour maintenance windows) with an OS upgrade which is part of this process.
