Update: Other than a 2 hour break from 2am to 4am PDT this morning and another 20 minute break around noon PDT, Daybreak Games froums, login, and game servers have been under sustained attack from DDoS flooding since 4pm yesterday (July 9th). A DDoS attack makes use of thousands of compromised computers (often in China as millions of internet users there are running unpatched Windows XP / Internet Explorer 6 machines) to send gigaquads of garbage packets to a specific target. The attack can be visualized in realtime at Norse Corp Security’s Realtime Mapping website. Attacks affecting Daybreak Games are routed through Level3 backbone in St. Louis, MO.

It’s not working because some idiots with nothing better to do wanted attention, so they found programs that do the DDOSing since they have no actual skills of their own. It’s like the old days when kids would set off fireworks in a school.

Obviously Finland doesn’t have much of a justice system. This bratty, immature child should be in jail and forbidden to use a computer. His cohorts should also be arrested and stand trial. I’m dismayed to find Finland’s justice system so inadequate. And, good going to CEO Smedley. So we are inconvenienced. Big Deal. Tyli

BS. That kid is actively trying to get Smedely and his family killed. These aren’t kids playing pranks. They called in bomb threats to a plane he was on. That is international terrorism and in the States thats 5 to 10 years in prison. They’re also responsible for swatting John Smedelys home, which is convincing the cops that there is an active threat to the lives of people coming from a specific location. The cops respond by sending swat teams to go to that location. Given how dangerous this can be with cops amped up on adrenaline looking for trouble this could be a very dangerous situation, not to mention the cost to the cops for deploying these troops. These actions are worth another 5 to 10 years of prison in the States. And as if all this wasn’t enough, they’ve stolen Smedelys and his families personal, financial and medical information and released it on the internet, which takes thousands of dollars and sometimes hundreds of hours to recover from.

Still think these are harmless kids TP’ing someones house?

Lets see. They’ve swatted his home multiple times. They’ve called in bomb threats on a plane he was on, causing it to be diverted to a military base to be searched and cleared, they’ve released his and his families personal, financial and medical information on the internet which takes thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours to recover from. Egging them on? He is playing it cool as far as I’m concerned. These felons need to be extradited to Texas where we can show them what real justice is.

Play it YOUR way!!! …Just let us totally take away all incinitives to risk your player’s life in player made dungeons. And take away most of the ‘neet’ spawners you could purchase for them too…. etc.

EQII a water / water divided world. With no player sailable ships you can navigate the waters with. Domino was open to that idea.

Hack is NOT the correct term here. There is no hack going on at Daybreak, only a denial of service. All that takes is loads of computers hitting up specific servers to deny service to everyone else. We’ve seen similar things in the old days when MMO’s first launched and on day 1 everyone has trouble logging in to play. The media, in general, may have associated the DDOS term with hack, but that does not mean it is correct.

Seriously, the people that play this game are as childish and petty as the delinquents that are causing the crashes. If Smed or anyone reads this, at this point I would hope they are doing what they are supposed to be instead of reading this, then you all are doing nothing but stressing them out further, I am sure at this point they realized they screwed up. I am sure everyone here has also scewed up once before and made people unhappy whether it was one or thousands. Regardless of what happens, look at it this way. When the first DDoS against Blizzard, SoE/DGC, Microsoft happen, did they call these people out? No. So they at that point ruined people’s day regardless if “calling out.” This is not Smeds fault and they caused him much stress, but I see this as Lizard Squads fault and doing not Smeds. Lizard Squad did not have to DDoS.

I agree, the internet is a place where psychological profiles of this kind of people can be observed more openly, probably due to alleged anonymity. I don’t mind people complain but wonder how apparently so strong feelings arise from such rather neglectable (gaming) problems. May be helplessness or a way to let go other frustrations maybe.

Sad as it it, Smed is an adult and should act like one and a professional also, yet he is not acting as either. Yes, they hit him and his family hard but you don’t tell the enemy, what you intend to do to him, you do things quietly and surprise him.
As for the Lizard, not only kids play these games adults do also. People like your granmother who have nothing else they can do because their bodies are fading. People with diabilities that can’t have any other enjoyment. This is not funny nor cute and saying you did it to show a lack of security is plain BS and we all know it.
Frankly, you both need to handle your disagreements in private, meet each other and go at it. But then its easy to be a big man behind a monitor and safe in your country. I doubt you would do that.
You are not a hero Lizard nor a big man, nor have done nothing great for humanity and I have to say neither is Smed for baiting you openly and making things worse.
You both need to see how you’re causing grief to people who never did a thing to you. It’s time to grow up, boys.

LOL No one would quit over 6 hours downtime, but intelligent people would definitely consider it after 3 major hacks without the company providing extra security and a contingency plan. The reality is, this is a SERIOUS problem and has very little to do with actual gaming time. The ignorant people posting naive shit should be the ones “getting a grip”.

Hacking is bypassing security through vulnerabilities in the software. A DDoS (i.e. a Distributed Denial of Service), on the other hand, is utilizing several systems (with or without a given system owner’s knowledge) to overload the target with access requests.

The former requires extensive knowledge about exploiting software vulnerabilities. The latter can be performed by a person with absolutely no knowledge of hacking that knows how to run a program.

tl;dr – hacking a system is fundamentally different from initiating a DDoS attack. If you are going to chastise someone for certain things that have occurred, you may want to consider using the appropriate terminology.

So much for your favourite SOE games, might as well cancel subs and move on and any time some wannabe hacker gets a hard-on for a game company people might as well forget those games because DDOS is impossible to stop(apparently).

DDOS is basically a kid or 2 using a bot program to try and log into the game repeatedly from multiple locations (possibly millions)
AKA, it’s the same appearance we have when we try to play. The only way to stop DDOS is to stop it at it’s source, or block everyone, including players.

Actually Daybreak further downgraded their customer support. They no longer handle missing item issues. Someone could hack your acnt and delete all your characters and they don’t care, your guild leader of a decade old guild could go offline and your guild is pooched. Look it up on Google, they literally say just that.

3 kids or whoever Lizard whatever
“Lets shut everything down involving Sony, Microsoft, Blizzard blah blah(of course this included SOE)

THEN here comes Smedly blah blah blah to Lizard kids

    Media
“Hey lets print everything that Smed with SOE said about these kids

    Lizard kids
“Hey who is this guy lets focus on him now”

    Lizard kids
“Hey Smed is going to SOE Live lets make his plane sit on the tarmac by threatening a bomb scare”

Smed more blah blah blah hey focus on me more

Lizard kid then gets arrested in another country and set free

Smed ” I think I will go on twitter and rant and draw more attention to myself”

    Media once again
“Hey lets print everything Smed posted on twitter like it wasnt bad enough already”

    Lizard kids
“Hey lets keep attacking this Smed guy and shut down all of Daybreaks games”

John Smedly needs to sign some kind of disclosure agreement to keep his mouth shut because we all pay for his stupidity, let these asshole kids focus on something else and STOP DRAWING ATTENTION TO US idiot.

What I *do* find fault with is Finland’s court system not even banning internet access as part of its probation order in this case. Since many of the charges (including most of the charges that are still pending) stem out of attacks against SOE or Smedly, it was inevitable that they’d attack again to prove they’re “untouchable.” The attacks probably would have happened even if Smed kept completely quiet. Yet instead of directing anger at the people and institutions that caused the problem, most of the people here are blaming the guy who was doxxed and had his credit destroyed.

As for non-China folks hacking China computers? The People’s Liberation Army is likely aware, and likely not amused.

The Chinese government is very slow, but known for taking extreme methods to solve their internal problems. No slap on the wrist; confiscation, execution.

And responding in kind externally. With millions of Chinese hackers, they are the last people you want to hack.

    http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2013/feb/23/mandiant-unit-61398-china-hacking
Chinese army hackers are the tip of the cyberwarfare iceberg

“Chinese denials of much hacking activity often have an air of plausibility due to the lack of sophisticated security for many organisations’ networks and the fact that individual hackers, motivated by patriotism or simple mischief, can do it. In 2011 one assault was traced to Chinese academic bodies.

Of course, China is not the world’s only hacker. Few people doubt that American spies and companies give as good as they get. Even though Beijing lurks behind the Great Firewall of China and strictly regulates its internet, the country in 2011 suffered some 500,000 cyber-attacks”

However, as far as I know, he never murdered anyone, raped anyone, he’s not a paedo or a terrorist. He’s just a big nerd with a bigger mouth. He doesn’t deserve to be targeted by this moon-faced cyberturd just for opening his mouth. Having been a victim of this kind of thing myself, not on such a grand scale of course, I can understand his stance on this, kind of. It’s basically a personal attack on him and his family and where I come from if someone attacks your family you try and do something about that, one way or another. Emotions can run high and you might not always consider the bigger picture or consequences of your actions. Comparing this whole thing to being on a battlefield and being shot at? Really?? It’s a game for goodness sake. There are other games to play when this kind of thing happens if you really need that fix. Maybe leave the house? Take the dog for a walk or go to the park with your kids. If this is how it upsets some people when they can’t play this game for a while, God help you if ever have a real problem to cope with.
