EQ2 Team Working to Nuke Unusual In-Game Plat Spam

Update from Gninja on the EQ2 Forums this morning:

This should be resolved. Let us know if you continue to see this sort of spam happening and not clear up quickly. Thanks for your patience!

EverQuest II’s chat spam filter is so effective that when it was first activated years ago, 99.999% of spam vanished within minutes.  Developed by Nandy “Zoltaroth” Szots while he was on the EQ2 team, his Bayesian Spam Filter nearly eliminated spam in SOE games and was also released as a white paper for other companies who wished to adopt it on the theory that if all games block most spam, it would no longer be profitable for such sites to exist. In the intervening years that the filter has been in effect, plat spam has been extremely rare and quickly eliminated through tuning of the algorithm.

For reasons unknown, possibly due to a recent change to whitelist “Daybreak Games” from being caught by the spam filter, a surprising amount of plat-selling spam has been getting through in the last few weeks. The vast majority of it is from one website — MMOCove. While it’s the policy of the official forums not to mention such sites, we’re under no such obligation.

I’ve personally expressed my opinion through the official e-mail (Yes it’s a Hotmail — lol!) of their website and I encourage other players to do the same. Tell em what you really feel about having to see this nonsense in your chatrooms night after night:

mmocove

And according to a post by Kander last night, we won’t have to endure this crap much longer as the EQ2 team are aware of it and already working on a solution:

We’re working on a fix for the filter guys. Shouldn’t be too long.

Nice, now if they would implement it in other games and take them out of business.

The filter used for EQ2 is the best I’ve ever seen in my entire MMO run. Glad you got it fixed. Kinda sad that people still buy from those sites. It’s gotta be why they’re still around. It’s also funny they still keep trying to spam after all these years oblivious to the fact they’ve been censored for a good portion of it. lol

The reason we are seeing them now is because of a bs plat dupe eploit, hundreds of million from what I’ve heard and its whats bring the economy to its knees and kronos from 2.5k to 5k in less than a month. If they don’t hurry and find that plat and the people and destroy it / ban them I don’t know how long the game will keep moving along.

Still terrible tonight on Permafrost, glad to know it is being worked on. My chat window is all purple from the spam text appearing in every channel.

Ok nevermind, my chat window for some reason had the spam box checked so that I could see all the spam. I didn’t know there was a spam box to be checked but it is definitely off now. Much better!
