EQ2 Team Working on “Crash to Desktop/Character Select” Issues

Written by Feldon on . Posted in EQ2, Game Updates & Maintenance

What started out as a thread by players wondering why an interesting feature (Map Fogging) had been removed got a clear explanation from Gninja and Caith as the team tries to solve the crashing issues certain players have been reporting.

Gninja started with:

This was actually a quick change and the reason it was done was because the amount of data that had to be stored on each character was contributing negatively to individual performance.

Caith added:

This change directly reduces character data that is sent to the client when zoning, by a significant amount in many cases. Character data size is one of the primary reasons, when combined with slow internet connections, of zoning timeouts. Or as it is more commonly known, crashing to character select while zoning.

In another thread, Jamiss has asked players to send him details of exactly when and where they are crashing so that he can further debug the issues. He had this report today:

An issue was resolved in today(2/12/2015)’s patch that may have taken care of some of these issues. For the rest of them, I’m working on digging and gathering more information. Thank you for the PMs!

Odd thing to stick in my mind, but I seem to remember one of you guys on a panel saying, in so many words, it was amazing we can zone as we do with each character carrying about 2mb of data. I don’t know beans about the tech there but… even I think 2mb sounds kind of heavy. Yeah?

Never heard of Map Fog. Miss much?

Since about the update before the last expansion came out about 70% of the time I camped the game would crash. I don’t think it was a timeout because when it happened it was immediate. Finally last week a guildmate told me to try deleting my cache folder. After I did that the crashes stopped.

I never once been asked to send data on any of my crash to desktops. I can say that one place I use to always crash was near the spire on enchanted lands. I also used to crash in Nek forest near the water fall. Crashing loading into the guild hall. The map fog had nothing to do with any of that. I found it had to do with water. Certain patches of water crash me hard to desktop. I moved a fountain from the front of the guild hall to the back, and that fixed that problem. Also if you get kicked to character select i find I crash trying to load my toon back in.

I crash 80% of the time when zoning to Tranquil Sea & 100% of the time zoning to my GH (50% when logging in). Seeing as I lost ram module in the last few weeks I am assuming that it is related to data transfer.

Me and several of my guildies are constandly crashing to the descktop at random times.
Here is the error message we are getting most of the time.

    G:\life\eq2\framework\core\devices\Directx9RenderDevice.ccp
    (15740)
    0
    01b9a25b

seeing that I do not have a G: this looks like there seems to be some problem located on the server.

I’m currently having this issue I believe I got the error message several times. I then did a clean install as previous searches said my UI (eq2map updater) and drums/profit could be a contributing factor. Although after the reinstall i’m crashing at random times and not while zoning, however, i’m no longer getting an error message.
