SOE Wasting No Time Rebranding as Daybreak Games

Written by Feldon on . Posted in Commentary

On one hand, SOE is wasting no time rebranding themselves as Daybreak Games. They’ve already renamed a number of Twitter accounts and their general forums. On the other hand, the company does not yet have a new logo design, as otherwise I’d have shared it with you. That’s not stopping maintenance from taking down an SOE sign that I stood in front of just 6 months ago…

SOE Daybreak Games president John Smedley took to twitter to provide some answers to the most common requests he’s been getting by e-mail:

answering a few questions people have emailed me

1) All our games are still up and will continue to be despite our new name.

2) Yes, we want to bring our games to Xbox One in addition to PS4.

3) Station Cash doesn’t change at all (though we will be rebranding it soon here).

4) We’re still making Everquest Next 🙂 nothing has changed.

Speaking of logos…

That is not the proper way to use a ladder.

Guess Daybreak games doesn’t have a ‘strong’ safety department. 😉

My logo design isn’t quite as extravagant as the one posted, but here’s my attempt…

I like it. I don’t think it would work for advertising, but it would make fantastic letterhead and excellent internal corporate branding.

Tell Smed he can have it for $1 million dollars.

Have to say the name is a wee bit disconcerting, sounds rather like ‘They break games’. Really hope not!

Staying positive and hoping that the EQ franchise will get stronger as a result.

“Daybreak” sounds like a morning talk show… and in fact, is the name of our local morning news show.

It just doesn’t sound “gamey” to me.

As Feldon well knows, Daybreak is the name of a breakfast TV show that is vapid and devoid of content. I’m hoping the similarities are restricted to the name.

Slightly worried that Smed assured the games will still be up but future development of existing games?

I sense a great disturbance in the force.

It’s rather ironic that the new company name is Daybreak Games. The old SOE was part of Sony. Sony’s origin country is Japan, ‘The Land of the Rising Sun’.

    Yes, MBA’s have zero creativity.

“We’re playing that most American of games.”
    “Which is what?” Web Smith
    “Catch-up.” John Connor
    Rising Sun (1993)

Well the movie poster background would make a good logo.

Different name and for the most part same assholes running it. Get rid of Smed, georgeson and holly would be good start.

One a turd always a turd regardless of what the name is.

Feldon, thanks for keeping us informed!

If my readers think Holly should go, then clearly I’m not keeping people all that well-informed.

Aye. She may not have the forum presence of a Smokejumper, but when it comes to doing what a producer is supposed to do (namely: make sure the team has everything it needs to successfully run the game [within the limits imposed by those above her], handle problems and stay out of the way of design), she’s far better than most previous producers (Smokejumper, Brenlo, maybe Froeche, possibly not Scott Hartsman).

Holly keeps (or tries to keep) as much B.S. off the team’s plate as possible. Most people can name the directors of popular famous movies. Can you name their producers?

Here’s hoping they now devote resources to fixing some of the graphical shadow issues in EQ2.
