SOE Login Servers, EQ2 Game & Forums Affected By H1Z1 Launch

UPDATE: 11 hours after the intended launch of H1Z1, SOE president John Smedley declared the login server issue “fixed“. However even now, SOE login servers, EQ2 game servers, EQ2 forums are all groaning under the load and experiencing performance issues. More often than not, the EQ2 forums throw “403 Forbidden” errors rather than displaying the page. This suggests a type of throttling normally seen as a management of DDoS attacks. From RadarX last night at 10pm PST:

We are continuing to investigate outstanding issues which may prevent players from logging in to EverQuest 2. We hope to have this resolved as quickly as possible and appreciate everyone’s patience. Thank you!

Original article:

Looks like SOE’s login hamsters are a bit distracted by the belated launch of SOE’s new zombie MMO game H1Z1 today at 3pm. As a result, logins to all SOE websites, forums, and games are completely freaked out. Hopefully things will calm down a bit and EQ2 servers (and forums) will become more responsive in the next few hours.

H1Z1 servers are doing just fine from what I’m told it’s just EQ2 thats getting resources throttled. Once again SOE makes sure to remind the red-headed stepchildren they don’t matter.

Here’s how SoE works: Release a half assed rushed title, try and milk as much as they can, move on to the next ‘big’ thing.

I would never touch an ‘early access’ (aka game in alpha stage) game ever.

That said, SoE is really stretching their already thinned out development teams way too far and wide. Apparently they shifted a lot of Planetside 2’s dev staff over to h1z1…leaving PS2 practically dead of updates for a while now. Best part is the game isn’t even ‘completed’.

Yeah, they killed login with the release of H1Z1…now I know how a used car feels being driven to the lot of the new car dealership for a trade in. Thanks for all the places you took me over the years old friend (Throws the keys to the dealer) So long, got something new!

Just think, as All Access players we get 2nd shot at H1Z1 after Steam gets the advance entry to the game while clogging up the login servers of EQ2.

Uhm, Smed… Zombies are so ten years ago (at least), yet this indulgent product launch is hosing your entire product line.

Refund me for the downtime in either pork ribs and bourbon at Southpaw or brrraaaaaiiinnnnssss.

    Just sayin’.

I was incredibly tired of everything Zombie before, and it’s really irritating me that we’re getting hammered in EQ2 because of it. I guess since I can’t get into EQ2, I should just shuffle off and get hammered IRL. . . where did I put the corkscrew?

In the closest drawer instead of the right one. I’d try there first.

Me, a new sake tonight. No sake necessary but it really is going down a bit too smoothly while Smed knocks back Red Bulls. heh

I finally got in the game late this afternoon… long enough to skill up Tinkering 30 points… Suddenly a guildie needed a crafter… so I switch.. and Boom!! I’m out again at 9:40 Pacific time. So the Login window is the culprit? Best to plan not switching characters for a while til this thing clears up. So much for planning an evening group.

Yep, I’ve had Smed’s twitter feed on a tab for awhile because nobody else is going to update nearly as much as him. Last tweet half hour ago: still hosed, so… no doubt my carp I’m trying to max will have plenty vitality back by the time we can log in again.

After watching a handful of videos of h1z1 I was not very impressed. The graphic seemed very lacking in about 50 minutes of gameplay I saw maybe 1 zombie. What’s the appeal?

Games today should have outstanding graphics and many do but I saw this one and it seemed very lacking.

I don’t understand why another games log in server (and EQ2 forums) are effecting game play in EQ2. WHY ARE THEY TIED TOGETHER??????

There are no game-specific login servers. SOE has a pool of login servers for all their games, their forums, their websites, their ecommerce. It’s a house of cards.

So why are they using Steam for H1Z1?
Is that just to handle the game downloads?

You guys know that it isn’t only EQ2 an H1Z1 log on issues, right? I can confirm the issue also is occurring for Planetside 2 (game and forums). Most likely this is affecting all SOE games and forums for those games… Crazy!

You have to ask yourself (in your best Ancient Aliens voice) Just WHAT was SMED thinking? Didn’t he even consider the zombies could come back and bite him?

Throwing the flagship franchise to the EQ2 forum wolves in favor of Zombies doesn’t even make a stick of sense.

Actually it makes plenty of sense. EQ2 is a decade old. H1Z1 is marketing off sandbox zombie games that have been quite popular in the past 6-8 years (DayZ, Dead Rising, Dead Island) ect.

If the flagship franchise is under the radar with no potential for growth, then there is no point to keep it as the flagship franchise. Though most of this is SoE’s fault with how they handle their IP’s.

They have been on a roll. H1Z1 is their love letter to Star Wars Galaxies Fans. Killing Tunare and having hordes of undead spawn from her blood is their love letter to Everquest Fans.
