SOE Impacted by DDOS because Mean People Suck

network-connections

So because there are people in this world with nothing better to do than engage in DDoS attacks on Blizzard, League of Legends, PlayStation Network, and Sony Online Entertainment, players are having difficulty connecting to or playing these games this morning.

I guess its safe to assume that this is also the cause of the extreme lag in game also

People and corporations need to start being held responsible, at some level, for the things their routers & PCs are doing while infected. While a lot of the issue these days comes from bad configuration and fundamental flaws (e.g., DNS amplification) think how much of it could be cut out of people started getting calls from their ISPs saying “Your PC is infected and participating in malicious attacks.” and providing info on some antivirus.

Of course holding the perpetrators of the hacks responsible helps, but its fish in the sea. Taking out the tools is the key, and that means taking down botnets as (and even before) they fully form.

While that sounds good, every person and business on the internet isn’t going to have the know how to do that. Not now, not ever.

In general, anything that requires each individual one by one by one to learn and do is doomed to failure.

The system needs to be changed.

So this kid’s apparent motivation is that Sony and other companies are getting “waves of cash” as he puts it, and he doesn’t know what they’re doing with it. What they’re doing with it is being forced into giving compensation to their subscribers for downtime some cranky 12 year old caused. Even if there were any legitimacy to the idea that they’re not giving enough back to their player base, causing a huge extra expense for them isn’t going to help. /sigh

Any way to track them down and relieve some frustration? -.- A field of broken glass and some naked DDOSers in the middle of it… with cut tendons….. sounds mighty nice right now.

Time to put an end to these I-thugs that hide in their mums’ basement and perform these shenanigans.

When this hit at about, I’d say 4am CDT (lost track questing, but roughly there), once I was able to actually get a message out, I told my server (Guk forever, woot) that I believed this was the issue because earlier my family had found out both the Glyph network (RIFT, Trove, ArceAge, Defiance), Path of Exile, and several others were under attack. Online games, far more than the ones listed above, have been trainwrecked by this.

And it sure as hell isn’t Sony’s fault.

What people fail to understand is that DDOSing is not a virus, it is not a hack, it isn’t even cracking (which is actually what most people refer to as hacking due to lack of knowledge. Cracking is what you’re thinking of), and If you have any kind of constantly flowing, hosted content on the internet, IE: you have servers, you are vulnerable, No. Matter. What.

For those of you who don’t know, in layman-ish terms, DDOSing is when some nimrod (or 100 of them) use programs to rapidly and endlessly ping that server’s routes, causing it to overload. For those of you who don’t know what pinging is, it’s making contact with the server and sending packets of information basically. Whenever we log in, and while we play, we are pinging the server. We are sending information to the server, pinging it, and it sends information back, pinging us, so that our game client can collect the data they are providing and vice versa. Now, the way we play sends packets along with pings, and that’s how our game data is transferred.

Mass DDOS like these assclowns are doing, is when they send massive packets and pings, far more than the various channels (or routes or pathways) between us and the server can handle, which is what causes the unbearable lag and even disconnects. Because as one route gets overloaded, SOE’s DDOS prevention is trying to route is through other channels.

But once we get there, these idiots are already moving on and trashing those.

So basically, even through Sony has methods in place to protect against this, there is literally only so much they can do.

Because, do you know how you protect against a Mass DDOS? You shut off your servers. You stop hosting content. Otherwise there are things for these twunts to attack, period.

IE: No game for us. I commend SOE for trying to do the best they can and even having a DDOS protection system in place to begin with.

There is NO sane reason for someone to go around assaulting basically every major online game, role playing and otherwise, but SOE has still taken measures against it.

Try to give them a break folks.

Yup. The only way to 100% prevent DDOS.. is to not allow traffic.. which kinda negates the fact you stopped the DDOs. /sigh
People who are dicks just for fun need to be exterminated. That’s the other, less legal method of stopping DDOS attacks. >.>
But hey, not that they are wanted for a bomb threat on an airplane, they will die of broken pelvises.. but not in a good way. ^_^

Now, imagine those are all men.. thugs… criminals…. Do lizards squeal like pigs?

I can’t help this, but every time I see “ddos”, I can’t help but put “il” in between a few letters and laugh.
