Will Heroic Characters (Insta-85) Be a Trial?

A curious tweet from Holly “Windstalker” Longdale last night has us wondering…

Wouldn’t you bet on “trying” being free and “buying” not?

Offering new players an 85 to run around in for a limited period to see if they like it, then kicking them back to Level 1 and saying “Hey, now you know what it feels like – get leveling!” doesn’t strike me as a sound business strategy, but saying “okay, now you know what an 85 feels like, want to cough up the money to stay that way?” does.

Sending you back to level 1 would defeat the whole purpose of what they’re trying to accomplish.

As for 85 being a trial, so SOE would give a certain number of days/hours of gameplay for free starting at level 85?

This is how i imagine how i could go,

Anyone can make a Heroic class, maybe even and many and you like (and have the available character slots)..

But you wont get any XP untill you buy or claim a Heroic class token for Station store or get from your /claim window

or even, get this buy for 350 Loyalty point tokens

Every gold sub get 1 for free

This is pure speculation and secretly my suggestion to SOE 🙂

Once again and as always.. they are a business and looking for new ways to make money and bring ppl to the game. I see people paying upwards of 100p an hour for PLing. So SoE sees this and says.. hmm.. we could offer a service that they are already willingly paying for and bring some people to the game at the same time. Anyone who has been playing the game can get to 85 rather easily already and a Heroic char probably wouldnt be all that enticing as it is.

I think with the new expac 1 Heroic char will be offered with its purchase and I wouldnt be shocked to see them on sale in market/on website like Krono.. something like that.

Trial might be some new come back to EQ2 and catch up to your friends now for re-subbing or $20 you get the Heroic char, mount and stuff and get back at it.

Her saying “Trying” certainly does make it sound temporary at least.

I like how she answered the question but provided no useful information and left confusion and apprehension in her wake. Is she running for Congress ?

This should be complitly free. This is a 9 years old game, with prety low population, no grouping at low levels, all the way solo. I’m sure most new players are tired around 50-60, may be early. And even if they are not, they do not learn how to tank or heal, because they don’t group untill top level.
Level 85 from the start is a great idea and I hope it will bring more people in the game.

And there is grouping at lvl 85? Its a solo fest to MAX_LVL/AA then you can group. Granted this does shorten the process of PL your buddy to MAX_LVL.

This is a win back system for Eq2 that what they called it when I was in Vegas. The Purpose of this system is to get old players and new players back into this game again. I really hope they won’t make this another Sc Gimick to get a lot of micro transactions out of us. Don’t get me wrong I like Sc stuff something like this needs to given to gold members and if the F2P accts want it all they have to do is buy a Krono.

Why would it not be free? I’m guessing you will start with gear that does not require unlocks, and maybe the quest rewards from the new quest line will have a new flag like “heroic armor” that free players can use without the legendary / fabled restriction. But then as soon as the quest line is over of course you’d still be limited to Expert spells and whatnot.

The only thing I didn’t like about the news so far is the idea that it’s a winback program. I think this feature is great for new and existing players alike. I would love to learn more about other classes by playing them, without levelling all the way from level 1 through content I have thoroughly experienced already.

I am going to be quite upset if they dangled this carrot saying here is what we are doing get everyone excited and then yank it away and say here is what we are doing if you pay for it. It should be free to gold members who are already paying for the game every month.

I had heard during the dev brunch( it came up about 10 min after you left Feldon) that their thinking at the time was 1 free 85 and the rest would cost SC. You had posted information to the contrary so I was tring to get confirmation of what I had heard straight from the horses mouth.

I’m sorry.. insta 85 toons. That’s like why doesn’t everyone use a wheelchair instead of walking. If the devs want to add something to the game try new and exciting content instead of this crap

I’m not sure that de-leveling a toon is technically possible. Devs were asked about changing class like crafters can and the response was that they wouldn’t know where to start. It’s too hard, so not gonna do it.

They can lock out or delete a Heroic toon but I wouldn’t expect then to do anything more complicated.

They’ll likely charge something eventually… they’d be dumb to pass up the chance to pick up a few coin and provide at least a minor obstacle to griefers, farmers, etc. that get banned.

I would guess at it being first one free – SC for the rest.

I don’t see a problem with insta85 at all – the game doesn’t begin properly till lvl 92 anyway, everything you have learned up until then goes out the window because of the stat inflation of Skyshrine gear.

    @Al
I recall the same conversation but thought it was just a throw it out idea. I could see them also using the vet tokens to buy them too… if they feel generous.

So, how many tokens would you spend for an instant 85? 25, 50, 100?

@Striinger. To me it sounded like they were still trying to figure out exactly what they wanted, but Zoltroth sounded pretty sure that at some point there would be a cost involved. The part that sounded uncertain was at what point (2nd, 3rd, etc) or how much it would cost at that point. But then again I could have just read too much into the conversation. I guess we will see in the next couple of days

A good question is if insta 85 trivializes older zones even more, are there plans or at least discussions of a revamp(s)? Are DoF instances the harbinger of things to come? If so, will we see overland revamps as well?
