EQ2 Servers Up and SOEmote is Now Live

Written by Feldon on . Posted in Uncategorized

SOEmote is now live on the EQ2 servers and we have reports that players are testing it out, especially in the Sinking Sands and other common zones. As soon as you login, EQ2 will try to see if you have a Webcam installed and if so, will bring up the SOEmote window with your face on the left and character on the right. You may need to increase the lighting in your room if you have Calibration problems. Some players may experience issues if they wear glasses or have a beard.

Has SOE even realized that half or more of the people in the US wear glasses. I am a bit underwhelmed on this big update. Maybe they can fix some of the issues now that this pet project is out of the way. So any bets on how long it will take for SOEMote to go the way of the Looking for Group tool or the ever popular Dungeon Finder…

I doubt that they will ‘fix’ any of the standing issues. They will still put lots of time into this and a lot more into little packs for their $tation ca$h bullshit for this…. This game died a long long time ago…

Wearing glasses: if you have anti-glare lenses, you’re fine. If not, better hope you can find a spot where monitor glare isn’t blaring out your eyes on the camera.

What’s really great about SOEMOTE – I crash continuously at login. Now to find the webcam and unplug it…

    Nice patch ugh.

lol you don’t see the person’s face, it just looks at your face with the webcam and moves your in game character’s face based on what you do!

Well I have a beard and wear glasses, yep I could not get soemote to work. Not to mention the endless crashes this update has caused my client.

After messing with it about an hour I unclicked the boxes.

Try deleting the c:/crash folder on your computer. That is from SOE and every person in guild that has been having issues that has deleted it has found the game running tons better afterward.

I have neither glasses nor a beard. I could barely get the emotes to occur at any camera distance or any lighting. When they did work, my character’s jaw and teeth were visible cutting through my lips. The frame rate became so low that I couldn’t move with enough precision to stand in front of my wife’s toon so she could see me.

Doesn’t Work + Hurts Performance = Total Fail

    lol, roflmao, lol, lol.

Not only do about half of the population wear glasses I am guessing that the distribution is a little skewed when it comes to people who play MMO’s. The proportion of players with glasses will likely be higher, factor in players without glasses but with beards (and what about moustaches? I am guessing it is any facial hair) and you might have covered over 60% of the player base.

Also how does this emote software improve your ability to: raid, run dungeons, solo, quest, craft, decorate your house/guild hall or any other in game activity?

Sooooo… They’ve completely frustrated the efforts of several members of the UI building community as well as their own UI build. Way to go! Putting holes in happiness… My proximity chat was always empty and of course, my voice chat still doesn’t output. fml

I’m not sure SOE can fix the problems with SOEmote, I think it has more to do with the natural properties of webcams. But who cares, really?

SOEmote worked ok for me and I wear glasses. I kept it running long enough to show one guildmate, then turned it off. I am looking forward to seeing some of the videos people will be able to put together with it though.

I see this as serving one main purpose: getting people to try EQ2. There will probably be a small amount of people that will see the videos of this feature and try out the game. A small portion of those people might actually like the game enough to stick around even after they’ve turned off SOEmote. So it might get a few more people to play.

Worth the effort? Tough to say since they didn’t write it, they just integrated it.

The type of player that is pulled in by this is the type of player that has helped take EQ2 in the wrong direction. I’m not interested in fluff uselessness. Where’s the content?!

The thing is, they can’t JUST add new/more content. Although (and yes, as a decorator and role-player [we exist] I am saying this) new/more content is good, there are other people in the audience who like this sort of thing and you have to please them, too, or they won’t stay or be as interested, which means less money for SOE.

    They’re a business, not a babysitter.
