Introducing EQ2U – All-You-Can-Eat Character, Guild, and Item Data!

Written by Feldon on . Posted in EQ2 Data & EQ2U

EQ2Wire is proud to introduce a new website built on the remarkable new EQ2 Data Feeds API. As a guest, you get all the functionality of the original EQ2Players site such as searching for Characters, Guilds, Items, and Spells in EverQuest II. But we see that as just the beginning.

We strongly encourage EVERYONE to take just a few moments and read the Help & FAQs page as it contains answers to a lot of questions you may have about Privacy.

Please remember that EQ2U is a Beta site and we have many more features in mind, as well as tweaks to the style and site layout.

One of the best pieces of news from last night’s EQ2Players Webcast (which I will do an article about) is that EQ2Players is running on the exact same API as us, so any new features they get, we’ll be able to do.

    Site is great.

I am noticing a weird bug, that I can’t duplicate. I was on a guild page, the guild level is 88, when I turned to the second page of characters the guild level went down to87, then I went to page 3, and again the guild level went down. It’s now stuck at guild level 86 for me. Even after leaving the site and coming back, I know the guild level is 88.

Dethdlr, alright, I figured it out.

While on the guild page, middle click on a member (to open them in a new tab/window), and then when you turn to the next page, the guild level changes, and stays at the current level until you middle click on a member again.

hmm, actually, it’s changing every time I click on a member, and then hit back as well.

@Kralus: I tried what I think you said to do but it worked fine for me. 🙁

Load a guild. Middle click on a member. Change to page two. Guild level stays the same for me. 🙁

I’m gonna go dive into the code instead of trying to repeat it.

It happens every single time I repeat the following steps, in both Firefox and IE:

    1. click on member
    2. hit back
    3. click page 2

    or

    1. middle click on member, opens page in background
    2. click page 2

Hey guys, AWESOME job, looks and works fantastically!

    A couple comments:
    1. The log-in seems to be bugged for me, I registered but it says my log-in info is incorrect. Is there a time between registering and being able to log-in?

    2. The AAs seem to be a little screwy. Anything that deals damage is showing very minimal damage. I’ve talked with they guy from beetny (can’t recall his name at the moment) and he says it’s very time consuming to get them all correct for 90s so I was wondering if it was the same deal you you?

Again, awesome work, just some comments.

Okay, now that I have thought about it more, I still don’t understand the point of this. Can somebody please explain the benefit of this information being readily available to one and all? I agree that Dethdlr did a good programming job, and kudos for making a pretty site with lots of information. In the end, though, I just don’t know why anybody would need / want to see all this stuff on the internet. (And, just a secondary thought… If this were your real life stuff, would you want to see all this splashed all over Facebook?)

  • Dethdlr

    |

@Epoling: I can explain the point of it from my perspective. I’ve got 6 level 90 characters. When I’m playing one of them and something drops that nobody in the group needs, I’d like to see if one of my alts can use it. This site lets me see that. If somebody says that they want to go work on a certain faction and ask is anyone wants to tag along, this site lets me see which of my characters needs to work on that faction. If someone asks me what my AA spec is on one of my characters, I can tell them to go here to look. If I find someone that is outparsing me on my own class, I can see what gear, spell tier, and AA spec they are using to try and make my character better. If you don’t want your characters visible, you know how to opt out. But this is valuable information for a lot of people that have multiple alts. At least that’s my personal take on it. 🙂

I guess I play very differently. I have 5 level 90’s, but don’t need for any that I am not playing. (Personally, just feel it is wrong – I know that makes me a minority.) I crash when alt-tabbing, so I don’t use other sites while playing anyway. I don’t care about faction (or at least putting my need for faction over a guild mates needs for a balanced group), so I just help out anybody who needs it with whichever character I have that is most qualified for that particular job.

I think too many people are worried about what comparing themselves to others and not worried enough about just doing well and choosing AA / Armor / Etc that makes them happy. (Honestly, DPS envy is enough to make me want to quit the game some days – I would really like to see it made totally invisible. Several of my guild mates obsess over it so much that grouping with them has lost any “Group” aspect – they are too busy treating it as a competition to see who comes out highest the DPS tree.

And I hate getting yelled at because I come out higher without purposely trying.) The idea of the AA specs being visible are as bad as the EQ2 Flames guides to getting the right AA set-up. Everybody ends up making cookie cutter characters when AA was supposed to be for individualizing them. One of the real problems with a tool like this is that it makes it far easier for less considerate people to try and force everybody they play with into a very definite AA mold in order to be a group.

The ability for the few jerks who ruin the game to abuse this is extremely powerful. So for me, your reasons don’t work, but as long as they do for you, that is totally cool. We are all individuals and what floats your boat doesn’t have to work for me.

Thank you for the great reply! Enjoy the game!

@Epoling: I resent you taking what I said and turning it into me hitting need for my alts. I clearly said that I used this when nobody in the group needed the item. You’re a private person. That’s fine. Opt out is easy. It’s been in the game for months now. Fan sites have no obligation to hide cached character data if the player later decides to opt out but we have chosen to do so to respect the privacy wishes of the player.

As for the faction example I gave, I was referring to cases where you may have multiple alts that would do the job equally. In that case, why would you want to go on a character that has max faction when you have another equally qualified one that needs the faction? That’s just silly. But without sites like this you would have to log them all on to find out. Either that or track it manually.

You like your privacy. We respect that. Even though we have no obligation to do so. That’s fine. But if you take a look at most of the other comments here, you are in the minority. But that’s ok. SOE set their feeds up so that people can opt out if they so chose.

I respect your opinion on privacy. But that doesn’t mean that everyone shares that opinion. For those who don’t, here we are. 🙂

@Epoling: simple fact is, if you want to be the best player you can be, comparing how you do thing to others is absolutely essential. This doesn’t have to be about DPS. Just watching others actions and setup, analyzing and discussing it, thats how you come to new insights. Imitation, adaptation, it is how humans learn things and improve. Tools like ACT and this great (!) EQ2U page are a very valuable assets in doing so.

    Epoling,

Several months ago, Sony Online Entertainment approached EQ2Wire and other sites and individuals about building EQ2 Data Feeds API-powered websites based on their data. This data is made publicly available to ANYONE who wants it simply by visiting http://data.soe.com/ and entering queries.

You have been able to Opt-Out since December from EQ2Players and all other websites that offer this data. If you feel that SOE is not going far enough on Privacy, feel free to send them feedback. I don’t feel that we have done anything legally, morally, or ethically wrong.

In my case it also helps me keep track of what spells I should be looking on the broker for without having to cycle through 5 alts not to mention the couple of classes my gf has that I don’t quite have memorized as to what she needs. Having access to this info can be very helpful in looking for stuff when you don’t happen to be on the character in question or your are trying to help someone else.

Just my 2 cents but it’s been largely mentioned before.

@Epoling I can understand your opinion of wanting to keep your infomation private, that’s a huge deal in today’s internet culture. The only thing I have to say is that wanting to improve yourself when you see another person doing better is way different than wanting to win a DPS race just for the sake of winning.

I personally always check out other peoples gear as I’m grouping with them or when they hop in to one of my guild’s casual raids. We raid two to three times a week and the other night’s I’m usually grouping. If I see someone who’s out DPSing me (either on the character I’m on if it’s a DPSer or on one of my T1 classes) I want to know what they’re doing differently than me, partially for personal reasons but mostly because I want to be the best I can be for my raid. This is important so that I am not the reason my raid force isn’t taking down that new mob or is struggling on things we may have on farm. It’s even more important for someone in a hardcore raid guild because them not doing their best could be the loss of their raid spot.

I understand the want to be private and that some may use this as a tool in their great E-peen DPS race, but even those folks are the minority when you look at people who play this game to be the best they can be and use this tool to improve their class. It’s not always about personal glory, sometimes it’s about improving for the groups they play with.

Site looks great. Won’t be using it myself but I’m sure it will be useful to many. I will indeed be sending feedback to SOE on the privacy issues, but that’s their responsibility, not yours. I’m pretty sure they will claim the data isn’t private at all and claim it is 100% owned by them, though so it will be a waste of typing 😛

I just got through opting out all my characters (took a while since it seems I have well over 30) but I notice that the basic information still turns up under a Guild search. I’m not particularly bothered, since who is in a guild is pretty self-evident in-game anyway, but is there a way to block it? Ideally, as Guild Leader I would like to opt-out the guild itself. Individual members would still be able to opt-in as their separate characters, of course, but the guild itself would not be found in a search under the Guild tab.

One more thing, requiring a minimum of 3 characters in the Name field when doing a character search limits you from making a more general search (e.g. if I wanted to search all Shadowknight Provisioners on Everfrost server, it still requires me to type in 3 characters for a name).

Do you find someone reading a newspaper over your shoulder on a train pleasant, neutral or unpleasant? That’s the sensation I’m talking about.

You don’t have anything to hide but it’s YOUR newspaper. You bought it and you get to read it. Someone can ask to borrow it and you can choose to say yes or no. It comes down to an issue of ownership.

Maybe you feel your characters are public property, which is absolutely fine. I feel mine are private property. Just because I wear clothes when I’m out in the street doesn’t give strangers the right to come up to me, turn back my collar and check the manufacturer’s label.

I don’t raid or PUG in in EQ2. All I do is solo or group with people already known to me. It’s not possible for me to have “something to hide” in any terms that would be relevant to a search on my characters since none of them interact with anyone other than people I already know, none of whom even realize EQ2Players or EQ2U even exist. It is, however, possible for me to have a sense of ownership, however unjustified, over the characters I have created. It’s an emotional thing. It’s not rational.

For all those wondering, the tabs on the character sheet are done like that on purpose. It’s a band-aid til we get it working like we want it to. Before we disabled those other tabs, if you clicked on them, it took you to the Equipment tab which was even more confusing. Hopefully we’ll get it worked out soon. It’s on the list. 🙂

Also, we require the three letters for the character searches for performance right now. SOE did an upgrade on their server on Tuesday which helped a lot and they have more upgrades planned. Hopefully after they finish all their upgrades we’ll be able to take those restrictions out and open it up to searching even more fields.

And I’m still trying to track down that darned guild level error. It’s being quite elusive. 🙁

I am seeing a pattern here. Some of the folks who are complaining about the wonderful new tool are some of the very folks who go out of there way all the time to bash feldon and company, and to make apologies for soe.

We been asking for at least a year to get a new tool since soe had just all but abandoned eq2players. I mean there is a thread thats like 2 years old asking for fixes to eq2players.

Now we have a new tool and all the apologist can do is gripe that somebody other than soe came up with it, and gripe that they dont want to be spied on. Just log in and click that box that says don’t share.

At least this tool is something a lot of us have been asking for for a very long time.

For those that are worried that this is an invasion of privacy, my first thought is, if you solo and don’t PUG, the odds of someone looking at your character to see what you have are probably so small it’s not even an issue. No one will actually care what gear or AAs you have, and won’t bother to look.

You can opt out, anyway, so I don’t see any issue here at all.

Clearly there is a demand and a need for this service, considering all the positive comments it’s gotten from the player community already. Thanks Feldon and Dethdlr for all your hard work!

Personally, I love the new site and gladly participate in it. I don’t care if people know everything about my characters, because I have nothing to hide. I play my characters the way that works for me, and if people disagree with it then so be it – I don’t care.

Anyway, Feldon and Co. did an excellent job making the new site, and I’m sure the people who complain about “privacy” have already used it to look at other people’s characters (hypocrites).

Are there any plans on Sony making available some samples of code that give examples of how the api works so that other sites or guilds can pull this information?

This would be very beneficial for guilds that raid to be able to pull equipment information of their raid members to be able to then make hit list sheets of what mobs they still need to focus on to get their peeps geared up.

The Data Feeds URL is http://data.soe.com/

More information about the API may be found in the Accessing Data forum. You may also get access to more information and discussion around the direction of the API by becoming a registered developer.

I’m not sure what example code SOE could provide that would cover every eventuality that people want to do. Also what language would it be written in? PHP? ASP? VB? Java?

    * Quest tracker for heritage and signature quests (sort of like the language tab now, where it shows you which you have finished and which you still need)
    * Similar to above, an Achievement Tracker

Quests are not currently in the feed. There are over 11,000 quests in EQ2[1], although many of those are hidden, conditional, behind-the-scenes type stuff that link other quests. According to Fluffy.dk, there are just over 8,800 quests which have been available in the past, or are currently available. Many quests are seasonal, tied to alignment, etc.

You asked just about Heritage Quests and Signature Quests. That might be a good compromise, but having them all would be very nice.

Achievements are in the feed. We want to do something really nice here, not just a table with 1,500 rows.

Great site ! Thank you !

Is it technically possible that in the future, EQ2U can also show appearance items that people wear ?

The data is there, but it will be a bit of a job. It’s certainly on the list.

@Feldon and Dethdlr, You guys rock. I just signed up for the site and it looks amazing. I might have to see about printing some of the info off for a couple of my toons. I think it would be a nice way to keep track of the gear I have. That way I know what I am wearing so I could bid or buy the right gear for alts. Sucks to buy a chest piece for a coercer and already have said item.

Just an FYI to everyone; if you have reforged gear the stats on the item does not reflect the reforged stats. However you char stats do reflect it. So be mindful when you are spending that dkp on alts. I didn’t read through all 87 or so post so if this has be reported already sorry.

Outstanding. Hope everyone looks at my toon’s underpants and then we can have a discussion about what raid to run to get the underpants with the golden thread. Joking aside… I am angry… at how good this effort turned out. Enraged with glee. You get the point. Nice work.

Feature Suggestions (although many are probably already thought of and a natural progression going forward):

Be able to sort wishlists by slot.

Ability to sort search results based on different stats (I saw when you search for an upgrade, it sorts by stamina).

More zone options under settings for gear searches (and TOFS zones are unclickable currently)

Can we get the information on set bonus pieces? Like rings for instance?

I wish SOE would have had the guts to not allow an opt-out. Back when EQ2players worked, its usefulness was significantly diminished because most characters you wanted to look up were blocked.

Most people with privacy concerns would probably have seen that they really had nothing to worry about after a week or two of the site being up. I think the most that would happen is that some exploiters might get called out.

By the way, love the site. I submitted a couple reports for minor bugs.

@Quabi Why do you think you have the write to look at someones char but they shouldn’t have the right to not allow you to see their char? If people don’t want you looking at their char that is their right just like it is your right to allow people to look at your char. Why do you need so badly to look at peoples char? Is your need to know what the Jones’s have so great you don’t care about how other people feel?

@Landiin I could live without the data feeds, but it’s frustrating to think, “Oh, this Rogue can tank well. I wonder how he has set himself up?”…only to find that he’s not on the site.

Not really a “rights issue” for me – just the service kinda becomes pointless if all the interesting characters are hidden. And why should I let other people try my AA/gear/adornment setups if they aren’t letting me try theirs? You could end up with practically no one showing their characters, and then all this work is for naught.

You can now Opt-in each character to show on your Alt list if you want.

If you don’t want your Alts listed, you don’t have to do anything.

@Feldon Is it possible to have “My Characters” sort by the date we added them to the list? Some toons I give a greater priority for leveling and right now it sorts alphabetically. Just curious…

Do you mean My Characters on the Home page, or the Characters page?

If it’s the latter, I’ve got a lot of things I want to do with that page.

Yeah, on both the Home page and the Character page would be great. Great work, Feldon!

Just tried it out… and was blown away! This is amazing. I especially like seeing my characters paperdoll art. I saved all of them to my pictures folders for historical reference. 🙂

Those who’re happy for everyone to see all their details have valid points, as do those who prefer to remain private; the system provides for both. What seems to be missing, and I can’t find any information on it, it is the middle road, where my information is visible to guild members but not to outsiders. Is this to be included? Perhaps as an optional paid-for extra?

      You mean on EQ2U?

The problem is, there is no way for you to prove to us that you “own” a character and grant us access to a character that is otherwise hidden. SOE does not provide this functionality.

I think there is some discussion about players being able to login to EQ2Players and authorize a site like EQ2U to see their characters or their guild when they’re otherwise hidden, but I think this might require lawyers. I think any site (like EQ2U) that wants this extra functionality should sign a privacy agreement with SOE that we will honor player privacy, and any site that violates that agreement would lose the extra access to hidden characters.

If such a method becomes available, where you can “prove” that you own a character with a token, and grant EQ2U permission to view your character even if it’s hidden for guests, then we’ll support it and I don’t believe we would charge extra for this.

Thanks for responding Feldon, and I see your point. It’s a pity though, because with the old EQ2Players, where we logged in with our game logins so were “identified” by the system, most of my guildies hid their details from the public but opened them to the guild.

My concern is trust in SOE is pretty shaky right now. Asking players to trust fan sites with their data EVEN if they have Opted Out may be a bridge too far. But maybe I am underestimating players.

I imagine they would have to go to EQ2Players and grant access to a specific website. I don’t think a Station login box on EQ2U is going to instill confidence.
