The Twelve Days of Velious – Aether Races

Written by Feldon on . Posted in Expansion News, Live Events

For the last day of the Destiny of Velious launch celebrations, every EQ2 and EQ2X player from level 1-90 is able to travel to Lavastorm, Butcherblock Mountains, or Tenebrous Tangle and fly around using a Tinkered flying machine. The quest and event has been placed near the entrance of the zone, thus the level of enemies should not prevent celebrations by all players of all levels.

Once you compete in a race through airborne rings in the allotted time, you receive a temporary flying contraption which is NO ZONE but which you can use to fully explore the entire zone and see just how much fun Flying Mounts are. After completing the race five times, you will receive a permanent C.R.A.S.H. Pad reward which is an appearance flying mount which requires having completed any flying mount quest to use, but can also be used as a 25% ground speed mount. If you love flying, but were hoping for an alternative to the various Gryphon mounts, here’s your chance.

Rewards:

  • 1 run: Test Pilot (title)
  • 5 runs: C.R.A.S.H. Pad flying appearance mount (permanent)
  • 10 runs: Crash Test Dummy Extraordinaire (title)

And according to Wilhelmina, there are special titles for finishing the course within a certain time:

  • 54s in Lavastorm: Smoking Ace (title)
  • 165s in Tenebrous Tangle : Cloud Buster (title)
  • ~80 in Butcherblock : Sea Hawk (title)

From EverQuest2.com:

Prizes include:

  • Cool new titles that show how awesome you are at racing.
  • The ability to toodle around the zone in the racer that you used…as long as you beat the course time when racing. (This goes away when you zone or log out.)
  • A new mount to use after you complete the Velious flying mount quests! (This is a permanent object and can be used after you complete the Gryphon quests in Velious.)

Lavastorm Race Track

There are also hazards and boons as you race, so you need to study courses to get the best times, high-score lists, and more.

Look for gnomish pirates at the race starts! The EQII Volunteer Guides will make appearances throughout the day, offering up a quest and a cool reward!

This was a disappointment. I couldn’t see which rings to travel through and ended up threading through rings more or less at random. Seems the correct rings light up bright green but they only flared up if you came very close. If this proximity “radius” had been enlarged a bit, the races could have been good sport.

The map shows the blue spot for the next ring, usefull for the first time you do a course.

Very good fun, the Lavastorm course was the easiest to navigate for first timers, although the most crowded so hard to get a good time on.

The hardest by far with the Tenebrous Tangle course since the distance between hoops was so much I had a couple of “where the heck next” moments and failed the course. But it was the hardest course out there, so fair enough!

On the seriously overloaded Splitpaw I only had a problem once on the Tenebrous tangle course where the first gate didn’t update, other then that the green highlights sort of happened fast enough, but with any racing a knowledge of the course was the key.

Definitely a blast and I really hope these courses do return for a special event again in the future.

I picked up a couple of the mounts too, they look just like the rattly death traps they were described as 🙂 Without the flying ability they can no longer fly, but still provide a 25% speed mount, good to see for a free event.

I really had a great time with this promotion – I hope they bring it back regularly with tinkerfest – be a shame if the time spent coding it was only used 1 day ever.

It was neat but I can’t get past how it looked like a starfleet armada getting ready to go up against the Borg. 🙂

They looked like cheep knock-offs of the starship enterprise 🙁 I probably would have preferred a sitting vehicle.

The 2-3 second timeouts were brutal, however the races still proved to be a very fun. Would be a shame to see the whole thing scraped after 1 day.

It was above and beyond what I was expecting. Client side lag made it kind of a pain to get the rings to “register” if flying through them at high speed. Overall it was a pleasant surprise from what I have come to expect.

There is also a purple mount reward from GMs. There was one in TT yesterday when I did the races, but had to report back to him about “my findings” 🙂

    Icecrash99,

The animation guys have been soliciting feedback on the forums about 4-5 emotes they could add, including a proper sit command. It would not actually “stick” you to a chair, because that would take months of matching up the heights of all the chairs. Instead, you will just do a knee bend and hang at the halfway point. So if you /sit on a chair that is too big or too small, it will look silly. But on a chair of the right size, it will look fine. I think he might also do /sleep and /faint.

I know some folks scoff at the need for these additions as “role play” type stuff, but once they’re added, it should allow mounts that we can “sit down” on like hovercraft, etc.
