Hotbar Replacement Bug

Written by Feldon on . Posted in Game Updates & Maintenance

Game Update 57 added an interesting new UI feature. As you gain adventure levels, newer spells are now supposed to replace the previous tier’s spell on your hotbar. For instance, if you have Roped Shot III and you gain the requisite level, Roped Shot IV would replace it on your hotbar.

However two things are happening.

  • First, the new spells acquired from leveling are replacing random existing spells on your hotbars.
  • Second, Master spells are being replaced by Apprentice spells of the next tier. This is ok in the 30’s and possibly 40’s, but beyond this level range, Apprentice spells will almost always be a downgrade over the previous tier’s Master.

Here is Gninja‘s response on this issue:

There is actually a bug currently where spells and/or abilities are replacing the wrong versions. We are looking into it. The way it should work is it should only replace it if it actually a higher quality spell of the same type.

I file this change under completely unnecessary and possibly more confusing than the old method. I’ve always sequestered new Apprentice spells into their own hotbar until such point that I can login my sage, alchemist, or jeweler to craft Expert (Adept III) versions of those spells.

I agree feldon, I didn’t even put t9 app/adept whatever spells on my hot bars till almost a month into the expansion when I finally got enough diamonds to upgrade. And even then some of my expert spells were still worse than my previous tier masters or because I’m a troub, some of my armor didn’t work with the new teir of spells (12 tone earring, myth, t3 set bonuses, t4 set bonuses). Definitely an unnecessary “fix”, since it doesn’t really fix anything…imo they are doing a lot of their fixing their fixes in this GU.

Automatic replacing works great for the really-free bronze level EQ2X where the max spell level is adept…

If it works as intended, it will be a really nice change. In the examples given above, it would work just like it does today. If you’ve upgraded the spells to Expert or above, it won’t replace it. If you still have it at Apprentice, it will go ahead and replace it on your hotbar so you don’t have to waste the time.

If you still have the Apprentice one when you get the next upgrade, 99.99% of the time, you’re going to just swap it out for the new Apprentice one.

The current problem is that it is overwriting random ‘other’ abilities, and macros and basically willy nilly putting your new spell anywhere it pleases.

Would have been nice if they’d put in an option to turn this “feature” off…I’d rather just look in my skill book and decide to replace it myself or not, than have it doing this random replacement garbage. I’m an EQ2 player, not a WoW player – I like to make my own decisions in the game!

I’m glad I read this, I thought I was going crazy! It happened twice yesterday, and I figured I just did some funky click-and-drag combo.

I too am one of those that keeps Apprentice level spells off on a separate bar until I can upgrade them; until then, I use my Adept/Expert/Master spells, which are almost always an upgrade.

As far as I can see it isn’t quite so random, it will overwrite the spell in the hotbar directly below where your previous tier version was, or so it seems to be consistently doing for me, just annoying if there does happen to be something in the space already.
